We now live in a world where Insurance is only used to prove to the Authorities that you are legal to be on the road , unless you want to be penalised for the next five years , its clearly not for claiming against .
But thousands of claims are made on motor insurance every day, 1750 people a year are killed in RTAs and thousands are injured, where claims are substantial. So it clearly is worth claiming.

I have had two separate cars written off while I was nowhere near them - oddly I was in the bath both times. Two separate addresses so it's not like I live on the local chav racetrack or something. One was in a layby on a country lane so quiet that I'd be surprised if the number of cars going past that day exceeded double digits.

Fortunately both times it wasn't like the other drivers were able to drive off into the night. The first time was in heavy rain and the young lady driving lost control at a corner a couple of hundred metres up the road, presumably got into an almighty tank slapper and ended up in the back of it. "I wasn't going that fast" she told me as we surveyed her totally unrecognisable hatchback and the extremely heavy Volvo it had pushed up a near vertical 10ft bank into my friends front garden. Second time was a different young lady who was absolutely sozzled. Passed the outside of my RX8 at 40 or so, only she was too pissed to judge distance so she didn't. Silly cow - I really liked that car.

My insurance didn't increase. I suppose it depends on the company.

The original Poster wasnt talking about deaths or injuries nor was anyone else , these thankfully make up a minuscule proportion of the claims made on Motor Insurance Policies . Ultimately people will do what they like when it comes to claiming against a Policy , what you cant do is notify an Insurer and then expect him not to load your next Policy come renewal time even if you dont at the time want to make a claim .
