Since when did you need to own something to regard it as cool? But since you asked, Youtubers, pro gamers, Tech bloggers, other social media influencers; these people are regarded as cool.
For clarity I'm not saying I think they are cool, but I'm a mid thirties, balding, fat powerfully built man - what I find cool is not what is actually cool but at least I'm self aware enough to know it.

You do get quite a bit of additional kit as standard (especially on the £79k base E-Tron GT which comes with the larger battery as standard) compared to the Taycan. Having spent some time on the Porsche configurator the list of options and their prices is staggering.
Jeez, you weren't kidding. I've just had a play on the configurator and specced a car how I'd have it if money wasn't a concern - over £40K in options! Lots of stuff that should just be standard as well e.g. electric folding mirrors.
£40k? smile

Christ man, what did you add?

The idea that the 90% middle aged, or older, men of PH have any idea what is 'cool' is laughable. The young consider Tesla cool so they are, whether that makes them good cars is an entirely separate conversation.

Audi RS e-tron is a handsome thing and Audi's always have lovely interiors, yes it's heavy but someone made the excellent point earlier that once you’re this far aware from being 'light', a couple of extra hundred Kgs don't really matter anymore. I do think the pricing is awfully strong when compared to the Taycan, surely the Porsche badge is still significantly more desirable?

I was on full money no object mode, I would not really spec that!

I've closed it now and can't be bothered redoing properly but at a glance
Ceramic brakes at £6900 + need to increase to 20" wheels another 1700
Fancy leather seats + Heating, cooling, Memory 5000 +
Extended leather 2000 +
Dynamic chassic control 2300
High End audi 4000
Matrix lights, Park assist, Adaptive Cruise, HUD - all ~1200

it mounts up fast!

If that's £40K and has a 250 mile range I'll take it.

Yes I thought he meant cool enough to buy however totally agree they may just see Tesla as cool product. As a sample of one though my son age 19 hates them.

There’s nothing ‘cool’ about owning a Tesla. Especially a model 3.
That is so true.
That's so not true, in my experience. Old farts on Pistonheads thinking they are the arbiters of "cool" is also funny. What's considered cool in cars varies by the age of the person considering it, with the young generally regarding Tesla's as cool and the old being more drawn towards historic brands such as Ferrari and Porsche. Audi is fairly low down the ladder, given the fact that they are more or less ubiquitous, just slightly above Ford and Nissan because Audis have nicer styling and halo cars such as the R8 and RS6, which are cool.

At the end of the day, young people think Tesla's are cool and therefore they are, because the young determine what's cool. Whether that's right or wrong is immaterial.

If I've told you, I've told everyone, don't generalise rofl

My 12 year old son has zero interest in cars. My 15 year old son is car mad and is impressed by EV acceleration but doesn't think Teslas are cool. There are a couple of new age 40 odd year olds, nearby, who have two Teslas but like to think themselves trendy.

A friend has a new Nissan Leaf and runs a business which involves his staff driving it. They vary in age from 20s to 40s and none want a Leaf and they drive pretty dull cars themselves. None are into cars but all find it a bit underwhelming. I can't say because I haven't driven it.

I do have an urge for a Twizy but that's about it.

smile This is Pistonheads, I thought all posts were supposed to be unsupported generalizations!

The Leaf / Tesla dichotomy is the one that confuses me the most on Pistonheads. I've not driven the Leaf, but I gather it's not in the least bit sporting to drive, fairly slow and looks (IMO) boring. If that was the future of all cars now that we're going electric, I'd be pretty gutted.

However, then an American who's a bit of a car enthusiast (first purchase when he made his first millions was a McLaren F1) pushes an alternative vision of the electric car future where the cars are insanely fast (0-60 in less than 2s for £110k FFS, that's Bugatti beating). And the Model 3 actually handles as well, with all the journo's who've driven it saying it is great fun to drive. You'd have thought Pistonheads (allegedly enthusiasts) would embrace this alternative to the Leaf, but no. Instead we get EV bingo (white goods, boring, ste interior, residuals, not cool, iPad on the dash, no soul).

You're all mad smile

TBF we / you also have ICE bingo (no future, dinosaur juice, not cool, Miraculous Battery Improvements incoming, no one does more than 50 miles a day so piss poor range doesn't matter, I charge at home it costs buttons, charging at home is so convenient I never have to visit those dirty smelly petrol stations ever again ...)

I'm sure people did feel the same about horses at the introduction of horseless carriages.
And no doubt the early advocates of cars had the same insufferable proselytizing attitude that EV early adopters have.

But eventually normal people came around to choosing what suited them best. And that's where we'll end up again.

That's because his dad is a right old curmudgeon. smile

my lad (17) and his mates seem to love it. The amount of passenger rides he 'organised' before lockdown kicked in was getting ridiculous (not that I minded of course.)

Hmm, tell that to my little guy. We just finished watching the Duke video of the '96 BPR season. He doesn't want a Tesla when he grows up!
