The Capri was a demonstrably poor car by the 1980s - thirsty, slow and handled like a boat. There is a reason that cars like the 260z or 200sx or celica or the supra outsold it.
Just wondering really but did cars like the 260Z, 200SX and Supra outsell the Capri? Was that in UK or in all markets? The Celica did in worldwide sales as it had a very long lifespan but presumably you’re including all Datsun/Nissan Z cars, not just the 260Z, to surpass the 1.9million Capri sales. Same with the Silvia? I.e. all variants not just the 200SX

In 1984 I bought a 1982 Capri 2.8i for £50 less than £5K and absolutely loved it - the best car I had ever had at the time, and so much better than the 1977 MK2 Escort RS2000 it replaced! But current prices don't seem to reflect that.

Still I think cars like that are best left in the past! I loved owning them then but wouldn't want either of them now.

In 2014 I bought a 2002 BMW E46 325ti Compact which reminded me of my Capri for being RWD with a 6 cylinder engine, manual gearbox, 4/5 seats and a hatch but it was way quicker and more refined, even though it cost just £1,950. But it was a much better car.

Rose-tints in action!
Yeah, nostalgia plays a big part. Capris were what you wished your dad had after you’d watch The Professionals.

Of course, nowadays, with prices no longer in the “Cars under £1000 “ of exchange and mart, they aren’t blue collar heroes any more - they’re in the same price category as tangibly better cars that Capri owners back in the day could only aspire to own, so the cars are shown up for what they are.
