RE: Peugeot 308 GTI | PH Used Buying Guide

I've supplied a fair few amount of these & they're a very good reliable (a Golf really isn't more reliable) car with overkill brakes BUT in most cases people are seeing around 40+k before needing to replace there discs, so maybe once every 4 years.
Yes they're 1k but you're getting a very sweet steer for that money & it's a performance car some parts are going to be expensive, they're no more sensitive than VAG's (but they are more effective) initial bite & once you've driven one for a few hours you won't think about it again.
The dash/steering wheel is marmite, I don't mind it & it works for me (I am 6'7) the steering wheel is a little to small for my taste but it's another thing you get used too.
The heating controls are annoying but it seems most cars are going this way so it may just be another thing you have to get used too.
Not every car has suffered with caliper issues & later cars seem to be less affected & when it comes to age/spec/mileage/reliability & fun they're very hard to beat even the 250's are worth a look especially when you can get one for 10k:

The only car that comes close to matching them for value is the Astra GTC VXR:

When you look at what you get ST/RS/GTI/Cupra wise these look even better value:
GTI I reckon the suspension refresh would cost more than the discs:

Or pay 3k more for something closer in mileage to the 250 above, which then means you're only £500 away from a 270 with half the mileage, as well as being 18 months newer & a better steer, at which point £1k for discs at some point over the next 4-5 years vs what you pay for the equivalent seems a small price to pay in the overall scheme of things.

If your looking for a hot hatch then I'd say one of these should be at least on the list for a test drive.

before plug 270hp, i had s4 and a6 both superchaget, and one golf 2009 gti.
And i know what is Oil Consumption whit these vags, golf had also gearbox issue, it didnt hold up dsg presure.
Repairing bils of these vags cost me one secondhand peugeot gti.
Ofcourse the quality in overal is bettern in vag consern.
Ford is rubbish, my friend had blown two headgasget whit ford focus rs.
Golf r and rs3 makes a difference between these hothach cars.

Interesting article and these are on my list to replace my GTI. Think the post above sums it up for me - the entrance price is lower for a reason and as I tend to keep cars for many years the costs will probably balance. Only issue is whether can get on with the interior. Two questions if any owners could advise
What’s the ride like compared to fast golfs etc?
Do they have heated seats?
Minor points I know but both of these can be deal breakers as have back issues - thanks

I own one of these, actually the red one in the reviews photo!
I had a 1.2 308 before & wanted more power, so hot this 2 years ago with 32k on the clock.
It's definitely hot it's quirks, but I kinda like that.........I don't want a shouty noisy car.......did all of that in my youth, so this being somewhat understated is actually good, for me!
The small steering wheel, and way the dash is set up suits me, and I like it, but understand why some wouldn't get on with it.
There is ra.lk of the screen being really laggy & awkward to use.........I haven't found that really & took about 2 seconds to get familiar with it.
I'd have preferred heated seats to massaging seats, but hey.
As for how it goes.......it's surprisingly quick considering it's a 1.6, but can also be quite economical when you need it to be.......I've seen 50+ mpg going steady many a time.
The brakes are silly expensive though, and Alcon fitted the calipers with mild steel pistons, which corrode & can seize up the brakes, but you can get the pistons changed for stainless relatively inexpensively which sorts that out.
I've had the front shocks & clutch master cylinder replaced under extended warranty last year at around 57k miles, and that's the only issue I've had with it.
I did consider changing to a newer low mileage one, but I like this one, do keeping it for the foreseeable future.
I've not driven a Golf GTi for some time, or the later shape Focus ST, so not in a position to compare really, but I do see those all the time, and the 308 less, so I enjoy having something a bit different & less common!
If you're considering one of these, there are some cracking deals on them out there, so I'd recommend going and trying one!

Looked at these when I bought the i30N. Quick, and light on its feet, but I couldn't get on with the i-Cockpit which I felt was just an exercise in stereotypical unnecessary French pushing of a pointless boundary and making something worse. Awful setup.
Researching reliability was what finally killed it off though. Lots of people reporting electrical niggles that dealers struggle to fix, and a few people claiming to have been stitched up for £3k to deal with seized brake calipers either just of of warranty, or by dealers weaselling out of covering them in warranty. It all looked like too much hassle, and I decided against. Being in old Audi that basically never worked 100% properly for more than couple of weeks at a time while I had it, reliability was perhaps more a focus for me than it might have otherwise been.
They do drive nicely though.

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the 250 and 270 engine mechanically? Does it still come with the same gearbox, clutch etc. Is it literally just a tweak in the tuning of the engine?
Nothing mechanical but you do miss out on the LSD & brakes by going for the 250.The Wookie said:

I'm surprised that you are surprised Wookie.
This is a very well known and documented problem.
It surprises me because normally anything remotely like this would generate a st storm! This is a very well known and documented problem.
Looks like I’m going to be the one creating it tomorrow

Sadly with a 6ft driver the rear seat passenger is firmly trapped. I don't know why they didn't give it a few inches more on the wheelbase.
Rear seat space was sacrificed for a bigger boot which for those of us who rarely if ever carry more than one passenger is extremely welcome.Legacywr said:
The 2-tone looks great when matched with blue IMO.

Thinking of getting a 2020 model with 14k miles. Still worth a punt? Most other cars in the same performance bracket seem cost more.
Are the brakes any cheaper to purchase now and have the issues with them been ironed out in the 2020 version?
A new set of pistons and seals for the callipers isn't that much and most garages could fit them (Or do it yourself). And there are cheaper alternatives for the discs. But still expensive compared to most. Are the brakes any cheaper to purchase now and have the issues with them been ironed out in the 2020 version?

I've been taking a good look at these. LSD, decent boot, 5 doors, light weight and different to a golf/leon.
It's the lack of heated seats that I'm worried about. My family will fight over who gets to sit the heated seat at the moment.
