A pertinent post for those who only tax their cars through the summer months.

If you’re planning on taxing your car in April, do it TODAY (31st March)!

The RFL rate rises by approximately 10% depending on banding tomorrow - you can avoid this by taxing the car today, but are still able to start the taxation from tomorrow (1st April).

As a side note - cars previously in Band A (so £0) such as my daily drive (a Citroen C1) move to Band B, and are liable for charge, from 2025. frown
Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of unearthing a convertible but the weather is horrible today but the weather doesn't look great well into April.

Took the covers off on Monday and fired it up for the first time since November. All sweet!

Just took it up the lane and back. Touched the brakes and on came the airbag light! Ah, dear, dear Alfas smile

Anyway it's booked in for a full health check, service, belts etc at the end of the month so we'll just add that to the list of to do's.

Thanks for this. I was going to tax it very shortly so would have been taxed from 1st April but may as well benefit from the lower rate so we're all set to hit the road tomorrow thumbup

Not quite a summer car but the weather recently has been too dreadful to venture out. We managed a run out round Anglesey with a local club last Sunday. Even saw some blue sky before the rain/drizzle/wind returned this week...

Are you not then paying an extra month for March? Ok, you're saving on April to October but would the cost of the extra month not potentially wipe that out?

Yes I wondered that. Can someone let me know the right thing to do as I'm poised to tax it today if that's wise?

So the top rate of VED for '01 - '17 vehicles will rise from £630 to somewhere around £700... headache

My "summer car" is never off the road really... Used all through winter unless there is torrential rain or ice/snow and it's mostly my daily driver!

I am looking forward to not freezing my nuts off though! hehe

Cheers!

I stayed in a B&B and the owner loaned me a book by Stirling Moss about great drives in the area. So I skipped the hiking and drove all day for 2 days instead! biggrin

I've just taxed mine from tomorrow. The .gov website gives you the option to tax from 1st March or 1st April. Even if you select 1st April you still only pay the lower pre-increase amount. Go on line tomorrow and you'll have no choice but to pay the increased VED.

Retaxed one of mine today and it just said 'taxed from 1st April' but I guess it was tax till the end of this month, rather than sorned.

Also old enough to be free, which is nice.

Is the airbag light coming thing the same as what happens with 147s and 156s where the cable under one of the seats accidentally gets unplugged, triggering the airbag light? Might be worth checking for an easy fix

Also common with the Peugeot 306 and I'm sure many many more. Other faults are available.

Full judgement is yet to come as I have done so little mileage so far, but the differences are quite surprisingly large. Not in a good/bad way but purely in terms of accentuating the kinds of car they are.

The Cayman is definitely more a sports car, feeling smaller, more immediate in its responses. Its ride on the 19" wheels is much harsher/louder in the cabin giving it a more mechanical feel. The steering is very responsive though not so quick away from the straight ahead. Gearchange is lovely - very mechanical, precise and well weighted. The brakes (now I have replaced them with new Brembo disks/pads) are very good with noticeably less assistance than the 370z, but ultimately still less stopping power that I have experienced so far.

The 370z in comparison is definitely the GT. Its ride on the 19" wheels is quite refined, There is less 'mechanical' noise in the cabin. It is the 7sp semi auto so a completely different experience there. The 370z is noticeably quicker (the Cayman is the 2.7 with the 5sp box) and whilst it is great fun to drive down twisty roads it isn't its natural habitat compared to the Cayman. It is a great car to cruise around in with the rumble from the big v6, but beyond that the engine sound isn't a patch on the flat 6 in the Cayman though!

Overall the 370z feels like it has an extra layer of refinement over the Cayman. It also has a more usable boot/hatch space that can fit the dogs in. No chance of that in the Cayman!

As this poster says - the website gives you an option for taxing from the 1st March or 1st April, both at the “old” price.

Appreciate the experience share Om. beer

I've never even sat in a Porsche(that might change soon though because my BIL has just purchased a 911(991.2) Carrera S cabriolet), so it is great to get an idea of how they drive thanks. thumbup
