Rolled past an old boy in his 60s at the traffic lights last year in the Chimaera and with a great big smile on his face he said "That sounds fruity ".
I like 'fruity'.
I'm the same. I like 'fruity'.
If I see a car with a nice engine under it's bonnet I will always drop my window so that I can hear the exhaust. Nowadays though you just don't get much luck because exhausts are so quiet now on modern performance cars.

1had a Tesla absolutely bomb past me a few months back and that seemed really weird seeing something go so fast but not make any noise! It was odd.
One did a standing start past me yesterday. The insane acceleration + the Star Trek soundtrack made it look like it had been teleported 200 yards down the roadI'm another in the "it depends" camp. - 50cc mopeds and most modern 4-cylinder shopping trolleys almost always sound rubbish but something a bit more interesting can sound fantastic and I enjoy hearing most bikes and 5+ cylinder cars being driven enthusiastically. I love running a cheap old shed as a daily and recently bought an old S60 (inline-5) from a mate. When the original back box rotted, he just replaced it with a straight pipe and to be honest the sound is so good it makes me giggle, especially as you just don't expect it from an otherwise sensible old Volvo. Even my neighbours have commented with surprise on how good it sounds...but then I do drive it gently through housing estates etc. so as not to be antisocial and I think that's absolutely key.
It does make me laugh that those seeming to complain about all exhaust noise don't see a problem when they're the ones making noise with power tools / lawnmowers and strimmers (which I don't mind if they're getting on with a job) or screaming kids / yapping terriers etc. etc. At the end of the day, if you have neighbours close by, you can't expect total silence.

Hmm. But you don’t choose to make those power tools deliberately louder because you think it’s makes you look cool, do you? That’s a consequence of their function.Loud pipes on a racetrack are a function of making the car go ever so slightly faster, where marginal gains count. Loud pipes on a road car are a very dubious cosmetic “enhancement” (in the eyes of the owner), because they think it makes them look cool. In reality, they just make you look silly in an urban environment as your previously law-abiding car farts as it leaves a junction.

Agree some cars are really poorly modified but I have no issue with a louder exhaust if pass MOTs etc.
What's sillier is piped sound through speakers but that's another thread entirely...

When I was in my twenties I loved them, and often had them on my cars. Now I'm nearer 50 I hate them
I'm of the same opinion. Gameface said:
No-one has ever mentioned anything at traffic lights, petrol stations (all three of them flare the revs on start up which I could do without sometimes), car parks, traffic jams or any other stationary or low speed environment.
This is the thing I don't like about mine on start-up - the initial 'rev-flare'. No pops and bang programmed in, though it does pre-match on the manual downshift which is a little embarrassing when you forget about it.Cruising it's not at all bad - as for noise in the higher rev-range not really an option unless I want to be nicked for speeding (1800rpm is over 70)

I once bought a sports exhaust for an XC90 I owned. I wasn't after more noise, but I figured it can't be too bad. It was a stainless steel catback which was cheaper than original in mild steel. So I bought it. Regretted that ! But on the right car a bit of noise is fine. My Hellcat sounds awesome even on it's regular/stock pipes.

I have a loud exhaust on my Lotus, a Larini Clubsport. Don't really care what people think as I love it - pops, bangs etc but is in keeping with the car so all good IMO. Of course, it is a stty 4 cylinder car so obviously some will think of it as the work of the devil...
You do realise that your pops and bangs probably really annoy some people, don't you? You obviously don't care about being a selfish dhead. Not only is your car illegal, it almost certainly adds to the ranks of people wanting to ban all modifications.
Way to go, champ.
More fuel for the Hippies and Haters bonfire of cars right there...

If I modify the exhaust on my car it's not for anyone else (these days they probably think their Hyundull is a better car because it does more MPG), it's because I like it that way and/or it improves performance. Still, I think that in most cases, it depends how the car, power tool or whatever is used. - If my neighbour started revving-up a strimmer at 5AM, I'd be much more annoyed than when he starts his sports bike and gently rides off to work.Loud pipes on a racetrack are a function of making the car go ever so slightly faster, where marginal gains count. Moving on slightly, another thing I'd like to point out is that in the not-too-distant past, everyday cars were much louder than they are now. My Discovery TD5 when standard (it's modified now but not for the purpose of making more noise) was much louder at idle or driving gently than my M140i is....and the old 206 1.9D shed that I used to have sounded like a cement mixer full of spanners!

Yeah but that's not cars getting louder, that's people buying diesels. My neighbour's new XC90 sounds like a shagged 80's Sherpa.M140i, though, now there a great sound although the exhaust can never sound quite as good as the older BM 6 cyls (one of my favourite all time exhaust sounds) because of the turbo(s) muffling it.
