Electronically complicated perhaps but mechanically simple. Way simpler than a regular S class mechanically. Borkage potential should be less hopefully but it'll date quicker than news print.
In my opinion borkage potential is the same as a new ICE S-Class. Of course, you remove engine and gearbox, but thats about it. A Lot of things are almost identical or very similar:

- Brakes
- (Air) Suspension
- Drivshafts
- Maybe a reduction gearbox
- Battery cooling, sometimes with water pumps and radiators
- Climate control with heat exchangers
- All the electromechanical extras (electronic seats, soft-close doors,...)
and then you add power electronics and the battery itself (and thinking about it, removing a battery is probably as compilcated as removing an engine). I think everyone had a piece of electronics in their life that just died suddenly.

There are still more than enough things that can go wrong.
Because of course ICE engines, gearboxes and exhaust systems have very few faults.

God that’s awkward looking. Another electric car where the glass seems too big or taken from another car.

Plus fake vents. Come on.
Wonder if the tacky LED bonnet strip will be as mis coloured in this as the other merc electric SUV?

Are the vents fake? Or does the A/C need to take in fresh air from somewhere? Do the batteries need to be cooled? But yes, it just looks fking awkward.

Its a hatch!!!! Yeah, now we are talking!

I am a little worried on the styling and the two tone doesnt do it for me. But, overall it looks good.

I would be interested how it looks in maybe a dark blue or something more flattering.

That interior to me looks absolutely epic.

Now that’s the limo of the future. Absolutely stunning. It’s great to see the Germans finally getting serious about putting the Californian upstarts back in their box. Well done, Mercedes. clap

I didn't say that, of course they go wrong. But we replace that with an electric motor (with bearings), power electronics and a lot of batterys. There are still oil filled gearboxes (Taycan: 2 gears) with gaskets, drive shafts with grease, cooling systems (with gaskets) and so on.

As i said, a lot of things are at least similar and the new things still have common, expensive problems, just not the same ones.

Looks impressive - genuinely a fresh design from the outside, making the most of the freedoms from an electric powertrain. Best seen inside though.

Would make a truly incredible airport taxi for the super rich, I can't imagine it's going to be much cheaper than £100k in any format. Let's see what the UK pricing is.
Fresh design, really?

90% plasticdynamics , there might be a really small slot for a air curtain over the front wheels but I’m sure someone with the budget of Mercedes could do it from the centre section or a small scoop under the bumper.

The overall shape reminds me of something(not the C60 something like an insight or similar but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Agreed. There isn't really any design to speak of just a focus on drag in order to get that headline range figure. Why else paint it two tone for press shots other than to try and hide the jelly mould shape?

Now the german "big boys" are getting serious, I am fascinated to see how badly Tesla is hit or if the "cult" of Tesla ownership tides them over

Personally if I owned any Tesla shares (which I don't) I would take my (substantial) profits and run, coz I think they will be "going down"

Carwow said the model range starts at 80k to 100k plus options.

If that's the case, would it be this, or a plasticky, characterless, badly made Tesla S? That would indeed be chalk and cheese, although I suspect this will be somewhat pricier than the Freemont-built 'appliance'.

I think this looks great, the inside is very special and a real differentiator.

Fair play to Tesla, they 'disrupted', but thankfully those that know how to make cars with a modicum of style and quality are now catching up.

This is important. A good rule of thumb for EVs is to take the stated range and take away 1/3. This is what you can expect to realistically achieve on an average cold and wet day in the UK when driving at normal speeds.

320 miles is good - great for an EV - but probably half what a diesel S-Class can do. Still, this is a really good effort from Mercedes and I’m sure with all the resources being ploughed into battery tech, the energy density will improve to a point where that 500-mile range will become reality.

The initial reviews are finding it's about 390 miles range in the real world (spring temperatures)

Tesla are still absolutely miles ahead with their Supercharger network though. It’s a big deal, especially when you consider that even in this very impressive Mercedes, you’re going to have to use a public charger if you venture more than about 160 miles from home.

This German language YouTube video shows the EQS achieving 22.4kWh/100km at average speed of 116km/h

Converted to units we can relate to, that's 2.7 miles/kWh at an average speed of 72mph!
