E60 BMW 545i Sport. Auto, heated leather seats and plenty of torque. One of those cars that made you feel as though you could just plonk yourself in it, rest your hands on the wheel, and exert almost no effort whatsover in getting to your destination. Some very nice touches, such as the stereo, which compensated for exterior noise, and the heated seats which could be adjusted to warm just your back or bum if you so wished.

One particularly memorable journey came after a week in the Lakes with family: they were driving me mad, so I decided to leave early and got up at 4am to drive back down south. I was back home at 7am!

I have had knocking on 40 cars but none really fall into the luxury category. Some had nice seats (Fuego GTX) but probably the height of it was a Saab 900 with narrowish tall tyres.

My current Insignia is softish and comfortable but would probably do far better without the 20" wheels and low profile tyres.

Sorry.
I dunno, I had a povvo-spec Gold hire car in the Highlands in 2020. The small wheels/deep tyre/softer suspension combo gave it a pretty good ride IMHO.

1999 Vauxhall Omega Elite 3.0. Mini face lift on a V plate. I can see why plod liked them so much.

2010 BMW 530d F10 SE spec on 18's. 2000rpm at 100 mph. Went to France & Spain multiple times in it. Fabulous.

Honourable mention to:

1988 Jaguar XJ-S V12, 1997 P38 Range Rover.

My 2008 Focus 2.0 diesel is pretty soothing. Not because it's super-wafty, but because it's so effortless. It just does what you expect of it.

To be fair, the thread title asks about the most soothing car you've 'had', rather than been in.

My director had an MV6 back-in-the-day, lovely for wafting along.

yes Brilliant cars.

I did around 20k in one pounding the motorways every day for six months in a previous life. My then employer was convinced I'd broken it because the monthly fuel bill was truly astonishing. biggrin

Also it depends on the roads in question. Tight country lanes are most relaxing in a narrower car than a full sized barge, doubly so if you're not fussed about driving it through hedges and down verges. Motorways are a different story, there the barge reigns supreme.

I'm on my second Grand Cherokee, and have done about 100,000 miles across the two.

Last year, to avoid flying due to Covid, I drove from SE England to Basel, did an all day meeting, and drove home again.

Now, I was glad to get home, but both ways, with radar cruise, comfy seats and a toll pass thingy in the windscreen it was easy.

When I was at uni one of my mates acquired a 1991 Peugeot 605 v6 from another mate that didn’t have anywhere to store it. So we used to smoke around in it and had a few road trips.

Was metallic brown, and had brown velour seats and a beige dashboard. Made you feel like a French politician. It was so comfy I think I spent most of the time I rode in it asleep accross the massive, soft rear seat. Lovely old thing. Wasn’t fast and drank loads of fuel but it made a good noise.

Lovely car the 605. You still see a few as daily drivers in France.

For me it's this, my first proper BMW I ever bought, a 1995 750i short wheelbase, got it for £2000 in summer of 2014, not a cheap car to run though by any means, thirsty doesn't begin to cover it.

Sublime otherwise, nappa leather, turbine smooth V12, soft suspension, plenty of poke when needed. And just look at the thing, is there a better looking 4-door saloon?

Replaced with this, equally comfortable but with a somewhat more composed ride. 2000 750i M-sport (81 made)

Current old e39 M5 is the opposite, frustrating car to drive unless going rather fast.

For me it's anything with a proper slush-matic transmission.

These new DSGs and so on just don't do it.
