L322 4.4 tdv8 are pretty good. I went into my purchase with the mindset of “whatever £££ I buy the car for, have the same left for fixing”

Extremely happy I bought a cheap one

They’re extremely comfortable and quiet. Double glazed front windows, logic 7 a/v, decent seats, quickish, decent mpg as standard from 2010-2012

Bit more poverty spec than some of the suggestions here. But a Vaux Omega 2.6 V6 CDX.
Lazy underpowered V6 bolted to an old school auto slush box. High profile tyres, soggy suspension and being CDX had (at the time) lots of toys and comfort.
It just wafted everywhere. Even on twisty B roads I felt happy pottering along in comfort, no need to push on.
Great car for what it was.

How has your luck been?

I’ve had a few 3.0 and 3.6 but never the 4.4. Never had any dreadful bills just small niggles to sort myself.

Probably my Citroen C6, road rage is near impossible from behind the wheel. Honourable mention to the Passat diesel too, totally uninspiring but just competent at absolutely everything.

1999 Volvo V70.

Audible sigh as you slip into the leather seats.

Everything works, don’t vex over clipping the apex, just appreciate a deep level of adequacy.

Although I’d like a T5 or T5R. Obvs.

Also on a Volvo theme, after rolling my souped up Escort in 2002 I needed a car quick, and my local garage owner had just lost his old man, I bought the deceased father's Volvo 940. Coming from a series of modified Fords into a big Volvo was quite an eye opener. I have been wafting about in big Volvos ever since.

Just wear, tear and preventative maintenance. Belts, pulleys, tyres, ball joints, bushes, ‘box flush, the odd pipe, rear brakes, front wiper motor, battery, starter. Not a huge amount in parts but a bit in labour - all easily diy if you have the time

Predictable post is predictable, but my GS450H is about the most comfortable thing I have ever driven.

PH mode - It’s also batst fast in a straight line, for what it is anyway.

Brand new company car - a 2003 out-the-box Volvo S60 2.0T 5 cylinder was the clear winner for me.

It’s taken near 20 years to (only just) beat it with my L405 3.0 TDV6 Range Rover.

Another S- Class

There was something about this S class I had for a few years as my work car... It always felt 'cozy' and protective. Black interior and I think it had some sort of 'scent' system. If I had a long journey I would always take this. Here it is at the long stay at Gatwick... after a tiring trip.. loosen the tie, light a cigar, pop on a bit of Bach and sail home... ahhhh...

I'm undecided on which was the most soothing.

My contenders were a 1978 Granada 2.8 Ghia, a 1985 Scorpio and a 1980 Mercedes W123 280e.

Thinking about it now probably the Merc. It just rode so smoothly with minimal road noise.

I bet the Scorpio was a bit of a come down after the Mercedes 280E.

Ok, so maybe not the most p'head question, but after returning to a motorway commute this week, in traffic, in the rain / dark...whilst wondering why I need fairly hard suspension and 420 Bhp (M4) for this particular journey, maybe it's my age, but I got to thinking what's the most soothing car I could choose for say £20k to £30k...You know, quiet, soaks up the third world road conditions across the UK with aplomb, feels secure and safe, seats you'd choose over your sofa and easy to punt along with effortless pace. Preferably not diesel.

I did contemplate an S class for the above reasons but so many are diesels which I've just gotten out of, but any experience or alternatives as an antidote to the stresses of 90%+ of modern motoring ?
A Poll at the front of this thread would be a helpful addition. Please?

I once had a bored & stroked Scorpio Cossie as a loaner. The ruched leather seats were a bit American/World of Leather but the overall refinement was excellent.

It converted me to large-engined barges.

Just to say again that I agree with many of these posts in general:
6-cylinder engine
leather seats
auto slush box.

But there are some hidden gems in lesser vehicles as well.

But also, Ergonomics are important. Many Mercedes don't do it for me in that department.

Something about an automatic diesel barge, just effortless.
