RE: Bristol Cars returns from the dead
Discussion
Pretty old news. I started a thread about this a couple of months ago: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The initial product plan is simple, with old Bristols like the Fighter, 411 and Speedster reimagined for the 2020s.
Nice...a quirky old badge, very niche, brought up to date, tell me more... article said:
Power will come from a 6.4-litre Chrysler Hemi paired with a ZF auto, and everything else - suspension, interior, electrical architecture - will be brought up to date as well.
Nice, nice, so as well as looking the part and having a rakish air about them it should actually work. Maybe the purists won't like it but it might mean that it's not too expenarticle said:

Who funds this nonsense?
"You know how Bristol cars went bust because they were outdated and too expensive?"
"Yep "
"How about we make them even more outdated and expensive"
"Genius. Here's a couple of million"
The EV stuff might have some legs, although it's still going to be ridiculously expensive."You know how Bristol cars went bust because they were outdated and too expensive?"

I actually quite liked the Fighter, but having seen one up close there was no denying that in terms of fit, finish, design and execution it was basically what you'd expect of an up-market kit car.
Asking £594K for one is a good joke, but I don't see many people astute enough to have become multi-milionaires falling for it.

Indeed - the effort & money spent on setting up a new brand instead goes into the product development, I know which I prefer.
As opposed to the money and effort having been spent acquiring the old brand?Cliftonite said:
The script badge shown is of the Bristol Omnibus Company/The Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company?!
They built and operated BUSES!
Exactly, this is Bristol Cars logo:They built and operated BUSES!
So I'm not sure if this new company is Bristol Cars Ltd, as that IP and assets was up for grabs a while ago:
https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/for-sale-bristo...
Or has this the real Bristol Cars Ltd, gone pop again?
https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/bristo...
Then we have this to consider:
"Bristol Manufacturing Limited (08164632 - Group), Bristol Fighter Limited (12449369), Bristol Buccaneer Limited (11986176) Bristol Electric Vehicles Limited (13021060) Bristol Cars™, Bristol Fighter™, Bristol Buccaneer™, Bristol Speedster™ and Bristol Electric™ are registered trademarks owned by our Group, together with other associated intangible and tangible assets. Gallafents, London act for our Group in relation to IP."

Is this something all together different?
https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/wh...
Has someone just bought up a different 'Bristol' IP and do they have the original drawings, jigs, prototypes etc. or not? It all sounds to me like an '80's pop group where the six original members disbanded, but now all of them still tour individually with backing singers, using a slightly different name from the original.
Why do old car company brands that have died and then someone tries to resuscitate them, always sound like they already stand on dodgy ground before a single car is produced?

As for resurrecting old company names, it went quite well for Triumph motorbikes.
But not Norton eh?Edited by sean ie3 on Saturday 8th May 12:27

Act Two. “Not the pub, dear boy. People redesign plebeian Defenders in them.” “Yes, but the Toy Soldier is a gastro pub.” “Yeah, so is The Sloaney Pony, but they just won’t do.. it has to be a club.” “ Stringfellow’s, then?” “Absolutely not. The RAC would do, or my Uncle Perigrene is a member of White’s. Dear Tony may have been called a Crook , but the old racer was a true gentleman.” “OK, then: Whites. Your shout.”
Won't happen. Will suffer all the same problems that every other person who tried to resurrect an old car brand has had. Buying the name is the easy bit. Designing a car is not that hard. Engineering it, building it reliably and selling it profitably with very limited funds is where they all go wrong.
Can't see this being any different. Sorry. Always liked the idea of a Bristol to the extent that I looked at a Blenheim series 2 once. Reality was quite different. You can see why they went under. It was neither old enough to be charming nor modern enough to make sense.
