Here's a spy shot of it. I think it looks good!
Muscular aesthetic, no silly grille, have brought back the straight 6 rather than retaining the 4pot as in the 235i. I'm a fan, especially when you consider some of the other monstrosities BMW appear to be releasing currently.
Looks good to my eyes, and with the B58 engine it's bound to be good. If you want lightweight, buy something else. Choice is never a bad thing.Muscular aesthetic, no silly grille, have brought back the straight 6 rather than retaining the 4pot as in the 235i. The lower bumper arrangement is very fussy and disjointed, but that seems to be the "in thing" these days; the days of trying to make performance cars look elegant seems to be long gone, everything has to look angry. I'll also never like that bonnet shut line a couple of inches above the grille - it just screams of cost cutting. Otherwise it looks pretty good, and whilst it's not remotely my sort of car we should be happy that BMW are still producing this sort of thing at all.

That's actually the best looking BMW I've seen in a while.Muscular aesthetic, no silly grille, have brought back the straight 6 rather than retaining the 4pot as in the 235i. I'm a fan, especially when you consider some of the other monstrosities BMW appear to be releasing currently.
Before you get carried away, that sentence is in the same context as 'that's the best looking warthog I've seen in a while' or 'that's the best looking drag queen I've seen in a while'. Yeah, it looks good...but still not really my cup of tea.

Colin Chapman by post three!
Just add lightness!
Every new model BMW release goes through the same process. Too heavy, too ugly, not a true BMW. Blah blah blah. Just add lightness!
Stop moaning and buy a bloody E28 if you want a 'pure' BMW. Except some people who liked the older BMWs will no doubt claim is was too heavy, too ugly and not a true BMW.

I’m wondering if any variants will have a manual gearbox
Probably just the 218d, the one that might as well have an auto.......No chance of a 6 cyl petrol having anything but an auto. It will be just like a slightly smaller M340i. Whoopee. I'm so excited. Not.
Very technically competant cars, but unless you are obsessed with carwow drag races where electronics, 4wd and launch control mean you, the passenger just happening to be sitting in the drivers seat, can therefore 'win', then its all a bit bland to me.
To give them credit though, at least they are still putting multi cyl petrol engines in new models.

i meant- my neighbour buys his German cars on PCP deals , mainly based on which car dealer offers the best pcp payement deal for a medium sized saloon over a time period.
- he doesn't care what grill is fitted as long as the pcp deal is sweet.
my point was i pay for my car upfront and although depreciation is a consideration. i am passionate about design when i shop not exclusively about the deal. I wonder possibly this is why so many ugly. overweight cars sales figures hold up in the face of criticism.i may be wrong its just a thought.
You seem to know your neighbour very well, perhaps he actually likes the grille as surely, this is quite subjective - still no idea what this has to do with PCP.- he doesn't care what grill is fitted as long as the pcp deal is sweet.

Conversely, you can be passionate about design and like the new grille, I can't see any reason for the two being mutually exclusive either.

That actually looks pretty good for those pics. Ooh i'm detecting fake exhaust outlets in the photo!
Why? They look very similar to the ones on a M440i or M340i, and they're not fake...A straight-6 3-litre twin turbo? Bravo BMW for producing this against the current tide of 2.0 litre 4-pot blandness, I’m surprised they’ve been this brave (/ foolish?). If they’ve avoided giving it a ‘chinese market clown car grille’ and also redesigned the body so that anyone over 5’10” doesn’t have to tilt their head over by 30deg to fit in the back, I might just consider one, it being one of the ‘last hurrahs’ of the performance IC engine.

I think that looks great but even if it doesn't but drives as well as the current one, I'm not overly bothered. Looking forward to the new M2 too.
Sounds like a good car to drive based on the Autocar article.Edited by nickfrog on Monday 17th May 13:45
Front and rear look good, the interior will be nice. I’m just not sold on the side profile when viewed square on.
