Yup! It’s absolutely terrifying. I’ve once had a bit of a scummy woman give me abuse about my ‘precious’ car when I was sat in an Asda car park waiting on my Mum. I think she thought I was so worried about the car I hadn’t left it when it was actually that I don’t like Asda and had no need to go in. I just ignored the scrote..

I hate to point this out on a forum for car enthusiasts but cars are literally just stuff. Completely replaceable and repairable stuff.
Yes we love them, yes we would like to care for them but if you want to use one to do anything other than stand and stare at you must accept that it may get damaged including by people who don’t see anything other than just another tin box.
Absolutely right. Yes we love them, yes we would like to care for them but if you want to use one to do anything other than stand and stare at you must accept that it may get damaged including by people who don’t see anything other than just another tin box.
It's quite mental letting a car cause you anxiety or compromise where you can go with it or where you can leave it or allow one keep you awake worrying at night. Been there and done that and have become aware life's too short and peace of mind is way to important to let cars fk it up.
Swallow your pride and get a shed. The sense of liberation that comes from having nothing to prove and nothing to loose is overwhelming.

I’ve got a L320 which I call the tank and I find that nobody wants to park anywhere near it. The 595, 997, i8 or M4 however attract people parking right next to them even when you’re miles away.
I'll often be inclined to park next to the nice car that is at the far end of the car park. I figure they are careful and as keen as myself to not ding or be dinged. The Moose said:

That doesn’t change the fact that damaging someone else’s property is a scummy thing to do.Yes we love them, yes we would like to care for them but if you want to use one to do anything other than stand and stare at you must accept that it may get damaged including by people who don’t see anything other than just another tin box.

What happens for the rest of the time when you are on a good road and what to have some fun? Do you get so frustrated with your worn out shed you set fire to the damn thing?
Not at all. You simply accept it's a worn out shed and the moment you do that there's no reason to get frustrated with it. You'll never own the perfect car for every single situation because nobody makes one. Every single car on the planet is compromised in one way or another and the thing to do is find the compromise that works best for you.
If you value the peace of mind that only comes once you're liberated yourself from care more than anything else then a shed is the obvious solution .
I don’t get this victim-blaming mentality going on here. I’ve taught my children to be mindful of other people’s cars when opening doors. Should I just stop and accept them treating other’s property with indifference? Yes, a car is just a car but to me my car/s is something important to me and I assume it’s the same for everyone, even though I know that’s not the case.

A shed is fine for the 5% of time it is parked in a crap supermarket but probably frustrating the rest of the time.
That'ss the issue.
Unless you buy a car solely to do the supermarket shop/station dump/pub run. And never touch it for anything else.
A shed everyday would be like death by 1000 cuts for me.

All these chilled out souls in a state of Zen about damage to things. ‘It’s only stuff’, ‘get over it’ etc.Right up until their property gets damaged.
I took the Landie to the supermarket once, and some girl parked so close to me she could barely get her door open to get out.
Unfortunately she was wearing white jeans, and ended up with a rather green arse from rubbing along the carefully cultivated moss all over the bodywork trying to extricate herself.

Would have liked to see her explain that to her husband. "It was from a car, honest". Unfortunately she was wearing white jeans, and ended up with a rather green arse from rubbing along the carefully cultivated moss all over the bodywork trying to extricate herself.

It's the same in service stations. I find a spot where there are several spaces free but still an SUV then pulls up and parks next to me.
I'm already out of the car but I stand there and wait to make sure there is no damage as he is parked so close to me.
Child one gets out and smashes the door against my car and runs to the toilet. Child two gets out and smashes the door against my car and runs off.
Parent notices me standing there so tells the third child to watch my door. He ignores and smashes the door against my car. Parent stands there saying "sorry but what can you do".
It's just not worth the agro, which is why I drive a shed.
Edit: oh and just to add, there was no car parked next to that car on the other side, so they could have all gotten out the otherside freely.
This is why I just leave the car at one if the fuel pumps. Occasionally get a few dirty looks and once had someone moan at me, but makes it impossible for someone to park close to you.I'm already out of the car but I stand there and wait to make sure there is no damage as he is parked so close to me.

Car park in town has 5 spaces against a wall where you have to parallel park. Earlier in the week a guy in an M2 competition patiently waited for my space even though it was half empty - then gave me a knowing smile and a thumbs up as we left.
OP here - glad Im not alone
Have sometimes thought of a shed TBH, it would be on winters/cross climates and have a sub 1 litre engine and be a pool car for the whole family
The thing is when you add up what insurance, VED and the odd visit to the local spanner man/woman would cost the occasional smart repair is actually comparable for my daily, which isnt actually driven that much around town as Im a cycle commuter - boo hiss, road tax etc - and my 8-10,000 miles/year are safely racked up outside supermarket car parks
Cheers
