I don’t get this victim-blaming mentality going on here. I’ve taught my children to be mindful of other people’s cars when opening doors. Should I just stop and accept them treating other’s property with indifference? Yes, a car is just a car but to me my car/s is something important to me and I assume it’s the same for everyone, even though I know that’s not the case.
All these chilled out souls in a state of Zen about damage to things. ‘It’s only stuff’, ‘get over it’ etc.Right up until their property gets damaged.
Was there not a story of someone coming back to their car only to find some self important Karen had dumped her handbag on the roof, and responded to Karen's claim of "only a car" by launching the bag across the car park?

OP here - glad Im not alone
Have sometimes thought of a shed TBH, it would be on winters/cross climates and have a sub 1 litre engine and be a pool car for the whole family
The thing is when you add up what insurance, VED and the odd visit to the local spanner man/woman would cost the occasional smart repair is actually comparable for my daily, which isnt actually driven that much around town as Im a cycle commuter - boo hiss, road tax etc - and my 8-10,000 miles/year are safely racked up outside supermarket car parks
Cheers

Get the shed I have recently bought a four year old car which is like new, but I have decided to keep the shed (for shed duties obviously !) and can just throw anything in the back from a week's shopping to a king size mattress to the tip. Man maths can always make the extra car cost-effective and not only can I not worry about supermarket car parks, but for some reason people do not cut me up in my battered Mazda
Nearly always park in far empty car park corners, preferably where somebody else can only get on one side of my car too, rather take the 20 second walk than fix dings and dents.
I dont even think its necessarily a respect for others type of issue either, its just that some people purely see cars as appliances, they are not aware of how someone could take extra pride in owning and maintaining a car, or how something mundane looking to them could be something special. To open a door onto someone else, they're dinging their own property in the same move, cos to themselves its just a thing.
Got friends and family whos cars look like hoarders kitchens inside, they knock their doors onto walls and bollards, force them into hedges to make them open wider, slam every door like Vinnie Jones, seriously your fking ears pop when they shut a bootlid, and they are the ones who look at ME like im weird for taking so much care of something.

The way around this is:
1. Have children - you can then park in the 'family' spaces with loads of room.
2. EV/Hybrid - then you can park in the big EV space, which are sometimes near the door
What big ev space?1. Have children - you can then park in the 'family' spaces with loads of room.

Don't know a single supermarket with a electric car space around here
Only know of two charging points in my entire town (approx 56k people)
One at a local shopping centre and one in the town centre

Yup! It’s absolutely terrifying. I’ve once had a bit of a scummy woman give me abuse about my ‘precious’ car when I was sat in an Asda car park waiting on my Mum. I think she thought I was so worried about the car I hadn’t left it when it was actually that I don’t like Asda and had no need to go in. I just ignored the scrote..
First time I’ve heard a woman being called a ‘scrote’!UpTheIron said:

I’ve got a L320 which I call the tank and I find that nobody wants to park anywhere near it. The 595, 997, i8 or M4 however attract people parking right next to them even when you’re miles away.
I'll often be inclined to park next to the nice car that is at the far end of the car park. I figure they are careful and as keen as myself to not ding or be dinged.I don’t know why anybody goes to the supermarket these days; forget about the concrete zoo where all the cars are crammed into; shopping online and having it delivered is quicker, more convenient and better for your blood pressure.
Unfortunately even then it’s still not possible to avoid public car parks and I’ve taken to using Street View to scope out parking at the destination if it’s unfamiliar, when I’m going out with the family. If it looks sketchy, we’re taking the wife’s car.

People who park at the back tend to be better parkers and it's generally less effort to park there than it is in the obvious places.
People who park at the back = don’t mind walking, aren’t obese mouth-breathers, better educated, more mindful of theirs and other people’s property. Those who park as close to the doors are the complete opposite. And probably drive a Mokka on lease. God, I love a good stereotype.
I picked up my parents this morning from a premier inn, there was an Aston Martin 4 door parked inbetween two vehicles, might have even been two vans. I noticed it last night and thought it was a vantage, anyway, i remember thinking the person was brave, but then if you have enough money not to care
You can guarantee if you park as far away as possible you will come out to somebody parked next to you,
Asda MK has about 600 spaces, happens every time.
I went there at 3am once (I work nights) parked slap bang in the middle of all the spaces, 3 cars in the car park. came out somebody in the space next to me.

I've just bought what was supposed to be a shed with tons of space for supermarket trips and general errand running in order to save my Porsche for fun trips. The only problem is that my new shed is far too nice and if it got any parking dings I'd be totally gutted. Oh well, I might have to buy another car for shedding duties!
By the way, that is glorious and belongs nowhere near an Asda carpark. AJB88 said:

Indeed. I parked on the far, empty, end of a Morrison’s; came back with a small ding and blue paint. The paint came off with a finger nail, the ding is very small, but ... some people.Asda MK has about 600 spaces, happens every time.

I hate to point this out on a forum for car enthusiasts but cars are literally just stuff. Completely replaceable and repairable stuff.
Yes we love them, yes we would like to care for them but if you want to use one to do anything other than stand and stare at you must accept that it may get damaged including by people who don’t see anything other than just another tin box.
If it were free to repair cars perhaps you would have a point. If I walked up to you in the street and slashed your shoes and clothes with a knife, would you also say “oh it’s just stuff” and walk off?

I think a large problem is parking spaces being too small for people who either don't care enough to park slowly and properly or people who don't possess the ability to park properly, which if they don't hit your car when entering or exiting their space causes havoc opening doors. My Honda Prelude is the exact length of my local Tesco car park spaces and I always have to extract myself due to small spaces and long coupe doors. If a 25 year old Honda coupe can barely fit in these spaces god help anybody who daily drives a sensible estate car or needs an SUV for any reason.
My solution is dashcam parking mode, end spaces and shopping during the night (which conveniently fits in well with my studies and job). Ashley Neal did a video about his brand new BMW 320d being scraped by a woman with questionable morals and how his dashcam caught it.

The state of that woman’s driving, did she reverse into the trolley bay as well? She says it wasn’t her but then moves the car...My solution is dashcam parking mode, end spaces and shopping during the night (which conveniently fits in well with my studies and job). Some on here saying it’s ‘just a car’ etc and ‘accidents happen’ yes your right but it’s not the damage that’s the issue it’s the out right lack of any respect for other people’s stuff and the don’t give a fk attitude. It’s their mistake accident or not so they should cough up and fix it regardless if it’s a car, house, my clothes, a bicycle. Why should I pay for and deal with someone else’s carelessness?
I reversed into someone’s car once and scuffed his bumper, knocked on his door told him and paid for it to be fixed as I’m not a complete scrote.
I can also park and get out/ back in my car without launching my door into the car next to me it’s not that difficult really.
I have to use a car park when I drive to work and if possible I always park in the end space as far over, and as far back, as possible. Yet this sweet old lady decided that she would park so close to me that she needed to not only open her door onto my car but then fold my mirror in so she could walk past!
And yes, those two spaces the other side were there when she ‘parked’. Along with about twenty other free spaces. And if she absolutely had to park there, why not reverse in and swing her door wide open unhindered?!
I know it’s only a 19 year old French stbox, but I like to look after it and I just think touching someone else’s car should be punishable by death.
No trial, no jury, straight to execution.
Popped out to get a haircut today. Parallel parked on the high street as is the norm at that bit of town and thought nothing of it.
Came back after having my barnet clipped to find a discarded cigarette butt on the bonnet. Fortunately there were still pools of rainwater on the car which had extinguished the cigarette instead of allowing it to burn all the way to the filter, but it's still left a mark on the paintwork.
Only had this car a couple of months.
