I hate to point this out on a forum for car enthusiasts but cars are literally just stuff. Completely replaceable and repairable stuff.
Yes we love them, yes we would like to care for them but if you want to use one to do anything other than stand and stare at you must accept that it may get damaged including by people who don’t see anything other than just another tin box.
If it were free to repair cars perhaps you would have a point. Yes we love them, yes we would like to care for them but if you want to use one to do anything other than stand and stare at you must accept that it may get damaged including by people who don’t see anything other than just another tin box.
If I walked up to you in the street and slashed your shoes and clothes with a knife, would you also say “oh it’s just stuff” and walk off?
Slashed clothes are useless but some missing paint won’t cause the car to leave you stranded on the M1.
I’m not saying it’s okay for anyone to damage someone else’s car. Just that there’s bigger things to worry about than our possessions.

Some people pay extortionate amounts for clothes. Personally I’m not that fussed. I choose quality and longevity over fashion. But I wouldn’t carelessly damage someone else’s expensive clothes, just because they don’t mean much to me.
People are hypocrites too. The ones that are happy banging their doors into your car at the supermarket (because they don’t care about your car or their car) are very unlikely to have the same carefree attitude towards their possessions that they do place value upon.

Unless you buy a car solely to do the supermarket shop/station dump/pub run. And never touch it for anything else.
I reckon there's a good few on here who own such a beast. If you're station car is a hot/warm hatch you've ticked both boxes
An old Corolla or similar would do the trick..

An extreme example really.

No it won't, but it will cost you potentially ££s to £££s to repair and leave your perhaps otherwise original car with a painted or several painted panels.Slashed clothes are useless but some missing paint won’t cause the car to leave you stranded on the M1.

Fine if you drive some banger you don't give a st about but this is a car enthusiasts forum so people do care about their cars and they're more likely to be something of value

I think it's terrible that this attitude is prevalent in Britain today. You should have every right to expect others to respect your property.
As I often say these days, most of society's problems could be fixed if ownership of a taser was allowed... (kidding).
i agree with you. taeer ownership would need a morality test though as many of these assholes would taser others because they look funny, or owned something nice or earned more than them, or dared to own a nice car or some other stupid reason. As I often say these days, most of society's problems could be fixed if ownership of a taser was allowed... (kidding).
There's an attitude at large these days, if you take a pride in and look after anything, could be your job your work vehicle or your own car, a sizeable minority of others out there who not only don't have that pride or responsibility gene but instead deliberately go out of their way to cause damage to what you care about, those accidental dings you think you suffer are often deliberate, note it's the hard of thinking barely literate type if you witness such behaviour and challenge it.
It's become an unfunny joke that every time we buy a new (to us) car, that within a week despite taking all precautions known to man someone will have opened a door onto it, and not just a ding here, it can be a fully creased door, this can't be envy of people with maybe too much money, we're talking anything from a newly bought 10 year old W124 Diesel saloon, a newly bought 6 year old W124 coupe (still have it), a 2 year old Citroen C2VTS and a new Hilux, all damaged in places we'd be unknowns so not some weirdo that has a hard on for me/us.
Even been reported to me that some bod was smashing my then new work trucks drivers door into a steel pillar multiple times, that's how half witted these types are, if you look after something, even if its not yours, they can't stand it.
Interesting point here, if it's a bloke that does such damage accidentally or otherwise take a look at the supposed female he's with, and no you wouldn't.

I do love reading all the hyperbolic accounts of damage caused by people in supermarket carparks, and eugenics inspired solutions to the problem.
Unless you drive something like a Citroen AX or a Renault 5 I think it is highly unlikely that creased panels or major damage would result from someone opening a car door, it moves from the careless to malicious damage which is a different thing entirely. Pretty much every car I have owned since I drove things like Minis has side protection panels, they usually soak up a fair amount of damage should someone open a car door into you.

What really annoys me is the perpetrator denying what they did when confronted immediately after the act. And their insincere "Sorry" followed by a look of what is the problem anyway. People have no respect, consideration or morales.
Where does PH stand on retaliation?
If you advocate it, your post will be taken down, and you will be banned from the thread. At least that's what happened to me.Where does PH stand on retaliation?
ETA;- not on this thread, obviously.

Petrified. In a car park. Really.
I don't get it either and once again I find myself wondering if I live in a parralel universe. I am pleased how careful most people are when opening their door. I am sure there are exceptions or perhaps I live in area of outstanding consideration for others. Came out of a supermarket with the missus, we had driven there in her car… got back to her car.. the car park was on a bit of a slope slight decline. The person who had parked next to her was another woman who had ‘secured’ her very full trolley from rolling away by leaning it against my missus’ car’s rear (colour coded) bumper. Wouldn’t have been so bad if was old black plastic bumper on a shed.
Even though she had ‘rested’ her trolley wedged against our car, she didn’t apologise or even move it, just carried on and said won’t be a minute but I’ve a lot of shopping. My missus went “nuts”. I’d have joined in the heated debate but was two women arguing, wasn’t my car and I wasn’t planning on being with the gf much longer so figured wasn’t my issue.
Person who was propping metal trolley against another car paintwork for her convenience, muttered something about us as conversation finished along the lines of we were idiots and our car “so precious”.

Best car park car is my Discovery 3.
Rock and tree sliders with step inserts stuck out beyond the bodywork so that caught the door lower edge.
The factory side strip was placed right at the most vulnerable part of the door.
You couldn’t hit the panels but would damage your own door on the steps...
I still parked away at the back of the car park though.
Although if I did see a nice car at an end bay, I parked next to it.
My basis was, I can get out the drivers side, but can give them room to get in their car. Plus their car can’t get damaged by Chantelle in her limited edition Corsa if I’ve taken the space.

You can guarantee if you park as far away as possible you will come out to somebody parked next to you,
Asda MK has about 600 spaces, happens every time.
I went there at 3am once (I work nights) parked slap bang in the middle of all the spaces, 3 cars in the car park. came out somebody in the space next to me.
This. Every time. Happened a few weeks ago in the COOP. 10 spaces either side. As I was walking away from the car I noticed a battered E Class drive in the direction of my car. The old coffin dodger pulls up on his drivers side within 300mm. I walked back and moved my car. I watched him get out with his walking stick, door wide open. There was no way he could have got out without resting his car door on mine. Asda MK has about 600 spaces, happens every time.

My basic theory is that some people need a car next to them to judge how to get into a space. To make sure they are straight and somewhat central between the lines. However some people are just rotters with little respect for anyone or anything.
