Is there a European-made car which looks less likely to have a V8 in it than the humble R500?
I can't see why you would buy one of these over an S-max or an XC90 for more than 5 seat family duties. Unless you must have the Merc badge or a V8?

I can't get over the looks of either the exterior or interior and suspect it will be as unreliable as a Range Rover.

How about a V8 XC90 - that probably looks even less likely to have a V8?
An SMax is a medium-sized shopping car, so I think we can discount that. smile

R-Class is an ugly car, I'll agree. But an XC90 is a small chunk smaller, and less luxurious, and IMO looking its age. Good cars I'm sure, but not directly comparable, IMO. R Class (L) is over a foot longer, and all of that (and more) will be in the cabin I think

And I'm one who'd say the Volvo badge is preferable to a Merc one at the current time.

I think a 2010 on 5.5 litre R-Class would make a fantastic family bus, but I gather they've got proper Mercedes build quality and they're as rare as rocking horse poo.

A lot of the allure of the R-Class from removed when seeing a couple and coming to the realisation that they are a shrunken ML Class rather than a pumped up E Class, and as such are built and drive like a ML.

I'm actually quite fond of the early ML/GL Mercedes, but I view them through the lenses of being a cheesy American SUV, but if you're expecting European like quality, it'a not quite to that standard, but then if you're comparing them to the likes a Ford S-Max....

For me the question would be whether the mirror switch has a neutral central position to stop any errant finger from bodging a mirror? If not, then it'd have to be on the left. Otherwise the most-used button for the roof is on the left for me, but I'm the kind of person who puts the roof down every dry journey in a convertible, irrespective of season.
The SL is ever so complex, the neutral central position can be used for the rear view mirror. This wins the award for most pointless piece of electrical convenience ever, and while it works, it both sounds terrible, while being terribly slow too. Given that R129 mirror housings are (these days) as fragile as those translucent ceramic vases that everyone watches Antiques Roadshow secretly hoping the assessor smashes it with a fumble (OK - that’s probably just me), while it works, I’m leaving it be.

Console is now fitted, I went with the original setup, as that’s what I’m used to - if you look closely, you can see the repairs Olly did, but given that the photo is taken at knee height rather than the 2’ further away an adult head looks from, it isn’t truly representative of how it looks in the car. With the radio panel in place, it looks even better as that hides more of the joins.

I now can’t decide whether I put the L/R window switches in R/L, or not, but I don’t care, they work. Of course, I had to test everything & the windows only went down, not up. Panic mode. Ah, window postion reset so the car knows where the windows are for the soft-top controller. Duh. (It’s amazing what you forget in the moment when you’ve not had the roof off in over a year). Oh, and the top left of the gear surround is a camera lens artifact rather than a veneer problem. Now that it’s all back together, next job is a good clean!

CL600 Competition

Credit to Stegal whoe posted the CL500 which sadly I didn't win.
Judging by their own website they took it into stock on 7th April.
https://www.bridgeclassiccars.co.uk/mercedes-cl600...

They sell cars too (rather than just raffle) so can't help but feel it could be old stock that there are now raffling for £21,330 (£6 x 3555) instead. If the 'spread' of raffle cost vs. retail weren't so ridiculous it would be worth a punt.

You've made a mistake.
That Bentley is missing two zeros after the 1 - purely for having such enormous dangling brass ones for buying it.

Small world, walked past that exact car last week in Partick. Have you looked at the mot history, it’s only done just over 28,000 miles...

Clearly doesn’t belong to R129SL then.
I also spied this last week, assume the miles are because it’s relatively recently imported and it’s on its second or third way round the clock. There’s another near identical one often parked on that stretch of dumbarton road.

On that topic I’ll sort out a readers thread soon and will be getting stuck in to trying to fix it soon. Still sitting in my warehouse (not a bonded one like the arnage scene in layer cake) looking mega though. My brother did ask if it had been parked on a driving range though.

I think if you're handy with the spanners and have another car to use when it's out of service running a C215 V8 need not be ruinous. There are rebuild kits for the ABC valve blocks, a hydraulic shop can make up ABC lines that fail, rebuild options on the struts, the engine and gearbox are bullet proof, and many faults can be overlooked or fixed at your leisure.

So it's fine if you value your time at zero.
Hi Stickleback, do you have any recommendations for ABC strut or pump rebuilds in case I ever need to use their services? Cheers

Looks like a great job!

The switches look right to me, they match the shape as you see them from inside the car.

Yup that's different alright and on face of it I like it. However there's a few things I don't. I don't mind back tints but the fronts look too dark possibly illegal. It's wrapped whereas the Capri blue car seemed to be factory order. I prefer non black interior like blue one, albeit was grubby, also quite low spec.

I'm not sure if it's diesel or petrol the blue was 5.5 V8. More importantly it's a private sale at £9k the blue was from dealer so some come back, I think was £10k.

I also have suss that cars modified heavily with body kit, rims, wraps, big exhausts were probably either crashed or trashed before the makeover.

ETA the blue one is also 9k and lower miles. Probably less owners.

Wrapped though, which tells me all I need to know.

A mate looked at this later one recently which is apparently original in red (I haven’t checked it really was, must be very rare if Merc did let it out of the factory like this, I mean was it really in the catalogue?!), he thought he could look past the err, “additions”. And could not. Funny that. Also amusing since viewing, the price has gone from 19995 to 23k. Good luck with that...

You can see the original colour in the door shuts. Looks like it was white to me.

Hi All,

Hoping you can help.
My E39 has decided now is the time to have a tiny hissy fit.

The wheel locking nut key is worn beyond use and I can’t get the locking nut off. I’d rather not damage them if possible.

Is it a BMW dealer order for the key, or is there a cheaper alternative? I can see the two digit number on the key.
