This isn't being sold in the USA either. Who's actually going to buy it?!

“the deployment of a new TNGA platform - the GA-F. This is the first designed for a body-on-frame model, and, as you can imagine, it's modernity is said to result in a quantum leap forward in rigidity, safety and dynamism.”
Is this correct? “A quantum leap forward in rigidity, safety and dynamism” is a phrase you’d expect to see following the statement that the body-on-frame has been phased out. This must actually be a monocoque, no?
Edit: Checked the Toyota press release. Still a body on frame. Fair enough!
I think it has two chassis stacked up together like Disco 3/4. Basically a monocoque on top of a ladder frame if you know what I mean. People who actually need a 4x4 .As someone else said, this looks to be aimed at China.
Why are people getting hung up on how it looks? I used to have an 80 series with triple diff locks - I need to tow for work ( on + off-road). It's a work-horse vehicle that's also reasonable on-road. Looked after, they're reliable for multiple 100's of thousands of km, they're great tow wagons, supremely functional & practical & relatively cheap to maintain. Nobody in the target demographic wants it to look like something from Maranello.

Out of the box this is certainly pretty ugly. But most people who use them properly don’t leave them in that state. In Oz, where they are ridiculously popular, it’s not uncommon for them to be driven straight from the dealers to an aftermarket company (often ARB) to get better suspension, wheels, lift kits, wheel carriers, winches, snorkels etc etc. Then they look good and function like nothing else. If you want one vehicle to handle anything (except a race track), the Landcruiser is it
Thanks to the increasing trend for "bush 4x4" trips, often people drive these things striaight from the dealer with zero miles on the clock and immediately take an angle grinder to the thing:Wonder if you get some money back if you take that bit back to the dealer and ask?? ;-)
The 200 Series with the twin-turbo V8 diesel was pretty much perfect. This looks like a step backwards in many respects.
Stateside, Toyota also offer the Sequoia/Tundra, which are awesome vehicles, and are rather less expensive than a 200 Series Landcruiser, but offer all the 4wd capability most people need and more.

I like it. Absolutely fit for purpose.
yes and no.The underpinnings are obviously excellent but the body has been 'styled' to try and give it some kerb appeal for civvies.
It would be so much better if they chopped off the side skirts (and the pointless side step) and swapped the front and rear bumpers for something less blingy.
It would also give it a higher ground clearance too. Even more fit for purpose.
They should sack the exterior designer and let the engineers finish it off.

That's the top spec model that's blinged up to suit Middle Eastern/Russian markets. I'll reserve full judgement until I can see the workhorse model with basic alloys/steelies, no chrome and sensible bumpers. The outgoing base 200 gives an idea of what it should look like.
