Yes, I would bet the drag would be improved by throwing most fake diffusers in the bin. Making that fake vent above it functional would help too, letting all that trapped air out. reduces drag at the back of the car? With the push for efficiency it's unlikely that a manufacturer would want it if all it did was add drag.
I think we've seen, in all things, that image and looks trump everything. As this thread shows. Neither of us know if that adds to the drag of the car.
