But painting them yellow if they're already red, for instance?
Porsches with yellow painted calipers are pretty tragic (i.e. faking they have PCCBs.).If I had nothing better to do with my money, I'd get my red ones painted black or silver to make them look "normal". Mind you, over time, they're starting to go black...

I agree that painted callipers look chav whether from the factory or after market.
This is the very first time I have ever heard anybody say that factory painted brake calipers look chav. Cue replies to say they also think they look chav.
Red calipers on a smokey old 1.9TDI VAG stter, on the other hand........

There's no need to play the my brakes are bigger/better/more expensive than your brakes game at all. If if top end brake tech is what you want then fair enough, but why not exercise a little discretion instead and not have it in nursery school colours for all to see?

Just to clarify - I have nothing against black as long as they don't look too glossy.
The problem these days is that even nice cars are often driven by chavs and they have no idea what is good taste.
Actually - I think MY problem is that good taste these days is no what I consider to be good taste.

The only people who knew were (a) the person who actually knew what an AMG was and (b) the owner when he got the eye-watering bill for new discs.
These days you'll hear the machine gun popping and brrrrapping from a mile away before the AMG with luminous calipers eventually comes into view looking like the owner's running the local Richard Grant franchise.

Yeah, I spose so. For years, AMG's just had the largest calipers available from the MB parts bin clamping some very large (bespoke) floating vented discs.

The test of course is ask would sales of very high end braking systems be affected if instead of being luminous they were totally indistinguishable in appearance from the brakes fitted to a diesel Fiesta.
If the answer is no and sales of high end braking systems remained the same then clearly they aren't being bought for showing off. But if the answer is yes and sales fell through the floor then it's obvious that's exactly what people are buying them for.

This thread is 2 years old, so we must be a bit slow on the uptake where I live, but these plates suddenly seem to be the must-have fashion accessory for many drivers around here. Whoever manufactures or fits them must be making a killing. I just find it strange that so many car owners think it worthwhile removing their perfectly good orthodox plates and replacing them with these new ones. Am I missing something? The last time I owned a car with raised number plates digits was my 1975 P reg Hillman Imp.
The day buying a "4D" number plate reaches the top of my to-do list is the day I lost my reason for existing. It's difficult to imagine ever getting to the position where that's the best thing I could do with that time or money. Including posting this in the sparse hope that someone thinking of buying a pair slaps themselves and realises that there are limitless opportunities to use those resources in a better way. Honestly I'd rather just put the money in the fuel tank and enjoy a nice drive than put new number plates on my car.

I once saw one that had 2 of the 4D letters missing, which got me thinking, can I just make digits 1, 3 and 5 4D on the plate my car came with? Then my name will be in 4D. Might start that craze myself.
That was a classic ploy - Plain yellow under plate, 4D Acrylics stuck on top - "Sorry officer, I wasn't trying to conceal my reg, a letter just fell off"Regulations required that the underlying plate still had the letters printed on properly though, as well as the 4D Doohickeys.
What’s surprising me is the number of “4d” plates which aren’t even private plates - just people (seemingly lots of +40yr old men) who have thought ‘oh they look cool’ and have spent their money on sh*te looking glossy 4d number plates.
