WTF happened to bargain V8s ?!

I remember back in 2006/7, there was an abundance of XJS HE V12s at pretty decent prices, no more than a couple of grand. Still wouldn't say no to one now.
It was around then I bought one for a grand. Needed paint but a full years MOT. Admittedly it didn't quite make it all the way home before it's gearbox ceased to function but they certainly dipped into cheap fun for a while. Not so much anymore. My best value V8 was the £250 SEL500 I did a "cheap Europe banger" rally in. Had sat for two years in field. New petrol, new brake fluid, bit of exhaust paste and it flew through an MOT then did about 3000 miles over a couple of weeks without the slightest hint of a problem.
I'm glad I scratched my Porsche 928 itch while they were cheap. Slightly disappointed that I never had a cheap TVR.

I think you missed my point. Let me explain it.
The poster I said "Jesus Christ" to is the one comparing a Rover SD1 to an M3. That's new level mental.
Btw, I own an E60 M5, you know nothing about bills
Not being an E60 is how I justify my "sensible running costs" The poster I said "Jesus Christ" to is the one comparing a Rover SD1 to an M3. That's new level mental.

That's an excellent strategy. We have friends with a Boxter that throws up eye watering four figure bills every time the local Porsche specialist gets his hands on it and another friend whose just spunked £20k on a very ordinary VW approved Golf.
Whenever Mrs JS gets a touch stroppy at the credit card bills involved in running a flaky old Jaguar V8 that likes a drink I simply remind her of that.

An internet myth
As a multiple TVR owner I can confirm no such thing exists so you can rest easy!
I am an experienced man math expert. The purchase price is clearly the only important thing. If I have to immediately spend twice as much again and god knows how much labour to make it run properly that doesn't count. As a multiple TVR owner I can confirm no such thing exists so you can rest easy!

Always happy to throw a couple grand a year at the M3, and bask in the satisfaction that its barely depreciated
"How can you afford that?" questions from the drivers of leased and financed new or nearly new shopping karts

In that case a TVR is absolutely the car for you! Everyone is getting tired of the farty pop pop cars, expensive maintenance and crap looks, so going back to when cars were built solid, no more reliable but easier to work on.
TVR's are rocketing up quickly, I originally budgeted £12k or so for a Chim, got lucky and snabbed one for £8k which flew through its MOT, but I am also aware that you will struggle to find another, and that it will need a chassis in the upcoming years, all worked into my buying ethos.
As for cheap to run, honestly so far it does 25mpg, owes me a few hundred quid in tyres and a boot strut, but I am under no illusion that it is going to remain like this

ooph. yeah so, kinda as expected. I had an RTA back in 2005 and netter £30k for body crippling expenses for some numpty pulling out in a junction.
Back then, could have had a quality NSX for £20k, S2000 for ~£5
Bought a ratty E36 M3 for £3.5k, spent that making it mechanically mint, then, relationship/commuting issues had to immediately sell.
So sad to see I might have just let the golden V8 years just pass by and sleep walk through it without realising!
