Stop me from buying my old car back
Discussion
Recently, I have been wanting to get back into one of the old cars that I have had (around 4 year ago). I have been browsing the classifieds on and off for a while, until today - where I have seen my old car up for sale (for a fair bit more than what I sold it for!)
Half of me thinks this to just do it, it's the car I regret selling, and I wanted another. The other half says it won't be as good as I remember it (it only has 6k more miles than what I sold it, however).
I'm not sure - has anyone else on here been in this situation?

Caterham, built by me 1990/1
Sold twelve years later as the TVR I had bought did everything better and I wasn't using it.
2014 buys car back, additional 12K miles and a little more worn....
18 months of "restoration" and it was back on the road.
Except it's done less than 1000 miles since as it's not being used.
keep thinking I should sell it.....

Depends on the car, I’d like my old 205GTI back but I expect it would go for more than I want to pay if it’s been maintained, still MOT’d and it’s nearly at 200k miles...
Was it really that good? Is there nothing newer that does it all better, faster and more reliably? I’d buy a Clio 182 trophy before the 205GTI for example

There are some cars, like some girlfriends I miss….. but there is a reason you move on, it won’t be the same, I’d say don’t do it….
The only caveat to this is if financial circumstances forced you to get rid years ago and now you can afford it again- in this case do go for it.
In short if you gave it up voluntarily, don’t go back…. If it was forced for reasons beyond your control, do (just the car not the girlfriend or wife!)

This depends massively on the car.
I have been in this situation 3 times over the past few years, and regretted buying back two if my old cars as they were nothing like they once were when I owned them
I had great intentions of returning both to as owned condition, but the reality was it was spending money on two old Golfs I’d never see back.
The one I didn’t buy back was my E90 M3, I loved the car but it bore too many memories of an unhappy time of my life, and I’d be constantly reminded of those by the car so I let it go
My experience of buying back my old cars hasn’t been positive, and it’s unlikely something I’d repeat

To discourage you then, our memories are very selective in that we only remember the best and the worst from years ago. We can - well,PHs can - get a bit sentimental about cars. The odds are that your former car will now be a disappointment and anti-climax. As a non-car analogy, it compares to going back to that ‘wonderful old pub’ you frequented 10 years ago, or some little known local beauty spot , or even visiting your old family house ...it just won’t be the same.
We had a 106 gti from new in 1998. A divorce saw it go to my ex wife in 2000. Loved that car so in 2001 I bought another, in red this time as opposed to silver. And I absolutely loved that car more than the 1st. Even now
I have a memory of driving from a uni pals place in Bexhill down to visit family in Devon on a gorgeous summer evening listening to the Royksopp album that said uni pal had given to me.
A Higher Place will still take me right back there whenever I listen to it. Incredibly delicious evocative memories of a time and place and car.
Yet I know if I bought a 106 gti tomorrow (if I could find one) the magic wouldn’t be there, it was of it’s time.
