Aston Martin launches 'A3' Vantage Roadster

Special edition celebrates 100 years of Aston's oldest surviving sports car

Never one to knowingly miss an anniversary, Aston Martin has commissioned a special edition Vantage Roadster to mark 100 years since its oldest surviving car was built. The 'A3' - only the third Aston Martin ever produced and one of five prototypes - was finished in 1921 and apparently used extensively by Lionel Martin, the manufacturer's co-founder.

The 11hp 1.5-litre car is said to be the pride of the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and was painstakingly restored to its original factory condition by famed pre-war specialist, Ecurie Bertelli. That says a lot, as since rolling off the production line, the 'A3' scored several light-car speed records, including first place at the Essex Motor Club Kop Hill Climb back in 1922, as well as lapping the Brooklands race circuit at an eye-watering 84.5mph a year later.

Naturally, Aston's exclusive personalisation service, Q by Aston Martin, has been tasked with the commemorative project for the special edition Vantage Roadster. It's not just a case of adding some shiny gold embroidery on the interior, either; a unique front grille with aluminium surround and Aston's heritage badge featuring on the black mesh help capture the 'A3''s spirit in this homage. There's also an engraved 'No 3' and bronze brake calipers and detailing, while inside, Chestnut Tan leather and stitching aim to "create a heritage ambience", or in other words, look a bit like patinated brass. Thankfully this version retains its 4.0-litre V8 engine, with 510hp and providing a slightly juicier 190mph.

Interested? You can place an order now, but production will be strictly limited to three examples, so you'd better get on with it. Otherwise you might have to wait for the 'A3' Vantage Roadster Commemoration, due in 100 years' time.

While it's logical to expect a whole load of hate for this car, there's some nice details on it IMO. The fluted seats, tread plates and original AM logo are quite nice. The only thing I'd have changed would be making all the leather Chesnut Tan, and having it with a patina effect, a bit like how Ferrari did the 70th Anniversary Lusso leather.

Yeah really corny. I wish car manufacturers could find a new schtick to sell these things. Instead of heritage editions why not make more cars for niche uses? A rally style car, an off-grid camping prepared one, a hill-climb edition…just seems so boring to add shiny bits of jewellery and a plaque.

I still find the back end too fussy and the headlights too small

In fairness this is a special edition between the Aston martin owners club heritage trust and the main dealer HWM, so it’s not a factory special edition per se.

You could go and build something like this yourself thru the Q program.

84mph must have felt pretty exciting in the A3. Probably wouldn't even notice it in the Vantage. Such progress.

I'm trying to remember what the last special edition was.

Yes it's yet another special edition but it really does look fantastic and what a great bit of heritage to hark back to. Nicely done Aston.

That's not a special edition. It's a halo model, a permanent addition to the line-up.

The F1 Edition Vantage is a series production variant of the Vantage (like a GT Porsche), it's not a special, limited run of cars.
The A3 Vantage is a dealer special, by HWM, it's not a factory limited edition, it was a HWM commission.

And lots of free publicity for the brand that puts it back into a buyers mind.
