100% The back end is an unmitigated disaster. Think back to the Bangle years and the criticism levelled at the E60, 6-series and E87 1-series. Those cars look almost regal next to this.
I liked the Bangle era cars other than the 7 which was nasty then and still is. The 6 rear end has grown on me over the years.

The rear end on this is far more of a mess.

Not sure I’m a fan of the silver detailing. The 220 looks a bit better at the rear because it retains normal, round stainless exhaust tips.

Signed, a vile little 1 Series Coupe owner.
I had a 125i M Sport. When it came out it looked weird. A few years down the line I thought it looked fantastic. And then now 5 years later I think it still looks stunning in a timeless sort of way.
I like the original 1 series coupe too. I think it’s a well proportioned little thing that has aged really well. I think it’s better looking than the 2 series that replaced it which was always a bit awkward to my eyes (the M2 seemed to hide the awkwardness of the rear with big arches etc).

This new one would have been a solid effort of the rear end hadn't melted.

Love the front, has an almost charger esque feel. Side profile I love as well.

But oh god the rear it is all out proportion!
Aye that was bugging me too about the front, glad someone else sees it!

True it looks a bit daring... I reserve judgement until I have seen it in the flesh and in different colours though.

I can't help thinking that perhaps the new M2 might just use the same wings and rear quarters to save money and contain price (or protect margin).

I've always struggled with the rear end/rear lights on the current 2 series coupe(it wouldn't stop me buying one but it's never looked right to my eyes though). This one has gone even worse again though rear end/rear lights for me. Perhaps it will look better in the metal, because photos don't always convey the design well though.

Have to agree with you, it looks so aggressive its not leaving much space for the M2. Bonnet bulge, rear flared arches and fake rear diffuser. 220d will be just as menacing as the incoming M2....

A bit of me just died

I'll go look at the Lotus Emira again.....

Like people getting heavier and fatter each year, wonder if weight makes differance to tyre wear.

For all the years of hating the Nissan Juke, I genuinely would rather drive a new Juke than this (and thats as a BMW owner...).

Are people really thinking this looks any good? To me it looks like Mahindra have tried to copy a bad Chinese copy of an old Austin or Daewoo.

I just wish BMW sales would drop off the planet to give them an idea how bad their design department are. Someone must be buying this stuff.

That rear end is one of the worst looking things I've ever seen. If that design was in the back of an old Kia or Daewoo people would quite rightly say its a brutally ugly car.

BMW are horrific looking cars nowadays.
As soon as I saw the pics of the rear I thought 1990's Proton Persona Coupe or Hyundai Accent Coupe - makes me think this new BMW styling is targeting the Asian market rather than us Europeans.

Absolutely agree on the just departing 2-series - I liked the slightly truncated look of the 1-series coupe and the 2 never looked right - the M2 cures the problem mostly with the bulging rear arches.

The more I look at this new one the more I like it though - yes the rear is view is a little odd in pics but overall I think the new 'standard' model looks a lot better than the last one and the boot may grow like the 1-series coupe did? .

As others have said - not sure what they can do for the M2, the current one is so much better than the standard car its based on for looks and performance, but the new one seems to have taken those bits already and is very quick.

You wouldn't have bought one anyway, based on your "current" garage, last updated in 2011.

Clearly trolling. One post in 124 months.

Looks like the tie-in with Toyota didn't end with the Z4/Supra. The front and rear lights are very GT86 but with these proportions, that is not a good thing.

That is one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen. A total abomination from every angle. The rear end is especially awful. Total fail.

Even if it weighed 1000kg, did 60mpg and 200mph I still couldn’t buy one.

Its no lightweight but the "EU Weight" incudes fluids, 90 % full fuel tank, a driver and luggage.

So its not gained over 200 kilos over say a previous M240i, it will have gained a few kilos and an apples vs apples comparison would perhaps indicate its 40 or so kilos gained for the new 4WD system which makes more sense.

Its never going to be a lightweight with a big six cylinder engine, just like the previous ones werent.

"Daytona violet" brought back from the grave. Never liked it but it an E36 M3 colour.

Something very similar was used on dodge chargers and became known as 'dick grape'
