No manual gearbox.... no thank you.
Bmw manuals were never considered great. In fact they’ve always been rubbery, imprecise and notchy (but not in the good sense) and not very pleasant, and the offset position of the clutch means it isn’t very comfortable either. Not to mention the CDV just takes away any shift feel anyway.

The ZF8 has always been the more involving.

This is much more like it; so glad they didn't ruin the front end with the grill. Been reading the comments with interest, as I just can't see the issue with the rear end!? It certainly doesn't offend. Maybe the lights could be a bit bigger, but other than that, fine.

I think someone else asked if there's going to be an M2? If so then why is this being called the flagship? Surely they must, the M2 seems a very popular car, and rightly so!

A sorted manual box is loads better than the ZF IME. But it's a modern fat old thing so probably has little appeal for me anyway.

A couple of people and some luggage and you are looking at a damn near 2 tonne 2 Series...

Good to see BMW are giving styling jobs to the visually impaired. Very admirable.

Spot on.

The amount of negativity towards this car is astounding, 120-or-so comments in.

In my opinion only...
Styling is fine (I like it). Better than a few recent BMW efforts. I've read the PH favourite phrase "gopping" (it never takes long), "vile" (is it though?) and on Instagram someone said they had been sick in their mouth. Where else would they be sick? And I'm betting no-one has been physically sick because of this car.
Looking at the dimensions compared to the outgoing F22 (which I accept wasn't everyone's favourite):
Length 4537 mm (+105 mm)
Width 1826 mm (+52 mm)
Height 1393 mm (-25 mm)
Wheelbase 2741 mm (+51 mm)
Front track 1573 mm (+52 mm)
Rear track 1587 mm (+31 mm)
Autobox - very few people buy the manuals, so shocker, BMW makes what sells. There may be a manual M2, but BMW UK might not bother offering it. And the ZF 8HP is a peach.
X Drive - there's probably a drift mode, so apart from all the weight, no complaints, right?
Weight - it seems to be the new PH fixation.

It's a 2 door coupe with a longitudinal 6 cylinder engine, RWD bias and small front grilles... yet the negativity is strong. A PH trait though, unfortunately.

M-cars are separate models, officially. So the M240i is the flagship of the 2 series coupe range.
The M2 comes next year, 450 bhp, S58 engine.

I've spent quite a bit of time driving cars with both transmissions, and I can't say I recognise your assessment in all honesty. Bit clunky going from 1st to 2nd, but otherwise absolutely fine, and fantastic to use when making progress. Not sure if it can compare to the might of the Polo Bluemotion, but after 3 manuals BMW's I will be doing my best to find number 4.

The ZF8 is a great autobox, but is still an auto, and loses that last degree of involvement for me.

" Granted, the manufacturer slightly ruined its two-door rep with the tacked-on awfulness of the Active Tourer compact MPV, and the four-door Gran Coupe is desperately tepid"

I never understood why the active (and gran) tourer were badged as 2 series. They are good cars but didn't land well with the traditionalists. Surely it would have made more sense to drop the 2 series name from them to avoid the confusion of them being built on totally different floor plans.

Man that’s fugly.

They’ve managed to make it look awkward from every angle. Quite impressive really.

I am finding it sligtly amusing that the motoring press and forums have been hailing the previous gen M140i/M240i as "the last of a generation - in-line 6 petrol engine - we won't see that again".So much stuff being spouted that we must all jump in while we can! Panic, panic, panic!

Then BMW reply that they're making a new M240i with an in-line 6 petrol engine.

I keep getting photos of this on my Instagram feed, and I still can't get my head around how bad the rear lights look(among other things). Do you think that they've put the photos out of a prototype of it by mistake? hehe

I'm pleased that you can still get a 2 series with a 6 cylinder engine though, and that is to be applauded I reckon.

In Kant's work on aesthetics he discusses that judgments of beauty are both based on what pleasure you as the beholder derive from an object as well as the beholder staking some kind of claim to the universal validity and communicability of this beauty..

And now, after so many years, we have a candidate for the universal constant of the opposite of aesthetics: the new BMW 2-Series.

This new one would have been a solid effort of the rear end hadn't melted.

True it looks a bit daring... I reserve judgement until I have seen it in the flesh and in different colours though.

I can't help thinking that perhaps the new M2 might just use the same wings and rear quarters to save money and contain price (or protect margin).
I think you’re right which will be a shame. Or the M2 will look so ridiculous that it’ll end up cartoon like (a bit like the C8 RS6).

I think the purple is ace.

I've always struggled with the rear end/rear lights on the current 2 series coupe(it wouldn't stop me buying one but it's never looked right to my eyes though). This one has gone even worse again though rear end/rear lights for me. Perhaps it will look better in the metal, because photos don't always convey the design well though.
I agree. It was a slightly awkward little thing but looked good in M form though.

It looks like it’s melted which is people’s issues. It doesn’t seem to match the front end.

Apparently according to TRL black options are already available to hide the skanky metallic beige details. That didn’t take long. hehe

Hm, looks ok i think, not very good but not as ugly as the M3/4/4 series/X7 and some of the next BMW models (look at spyshots of the X8 and new 7).

What i don't understand is that they removed the "double/angel eye" headlights and have gone for a conventional single headlight. It was one of BMWs long time styling characteristics and there is nothing wrong with keeping such things (hofmeister kink, small-ish kidneys), even on a new more ugly more bold design.
They really want to be absolutely generic. It is like apple removing their logo from the iPhone to look more like a chinese copy of an iPhone.

At least it is RWD with an I6 available.

I think it looks ok, but I’m always surprised how tall modern cars look. It looks like it needs less metal above the wheelarches.

It's like the old one but with creases, lines and bulges everywhere. Then more creases, lines and bulges on top of those! The horizon line down the bodyside of the car is a mess, really, really odd surfacing just all over it...

Colour is nice though.
