I have gone from a GT3 Porsche to the GR Yaris and have my name down for this new RS3. I don't think you can put true petrolheads into car type boxes. I buy cars that speak to my heart regardless of price or level of interior plastic.
Indeed, I'm a car enthusiast, not a brand we, though I've been a bit of a BW fanboi of late.I did try several Audi's S3/RS3 in the past but they've never excited. Perhaps with the new torque device that can change.
Love the AMG A45S too and now have a deposit on a Lotus Emira. I was looking at a Cayman and Macan. Whole range of cars and not pigeon holed into one type.
Looked at the GR Yaris myself at the early preview events and regret not getting one of the early ones now.

My problem is that I'm a bit of an engine snob, so that straight away stops me from buying the GR Yaris to be fair. I'm sure that it is a great car(and everyone seems to wax lyrical about it), but I personally just can't get past the engine. The thought of a small capacity 3 cylinder engine just doesn't get my juices flowing enough.
Don't you have a 4 cylinder mini? Not exactly a prestige engine.Leon R said:

That's how I know that I definitely couldn't go any smaller than that to be fair, and that engine never felt in anyway special to use for me. I was personally very surprised that BMW use that engine in their 5/6 and 7 series being honest. Leon R said:
I guess that means you don't like hot hatches then!
No I do! Please don't get me wrong, and I loved my Cooper S to drive for sure, but the engine was very ordinary to use...but very effective though. That is how I imagine the engine in the GR Yaris to be like as well, but I've not had a go in one though...so I could be way off the mark being fair.
I think a good sum up for me is that I'd only buy this RS3 for the engine. I know that Audi's don't drive well(I've had an Audi TTS), but I'd forgive the way that this drives because it has a nice engine for me.
The engine is the most important part for me with a car, hence why the GR Yaris doesn't get me going.

It's got everything you need for a road car though. Decent engine, awd, decent place to sit and infotainment, nice looking and not MASSIVE so you can drive it quick anywhere. Good visibility and size has held enjoyment back on a few cars I've owned. The fact it doesn't handle like an Exige won't be noticeable in road conditions. Yes and the TTS I had was a lovely thing to sit in and live with for sure. I also really liked how fairly small, light and nimble it felt too. Dynamically though it just fell well short for me, especially in comparison to a lot of other cars that I'd had. From what I read now though, Audi's are less dull and more confidence inspiring to drive now than they used to be though. The TTS never gave me much confidence in the corners for some reason, and that felt very odd to me for something that had 4wd. I remember the Mitsubishi Evo 8(4wd/same size engine etc) that I had a go in made me feel like I was a driving god in comparison.
I wonder when these will be on the UK website for us to play on the configurator.
I considered the last RS3 Saloon but I felt like the seat would not go low enough for me. I felt really 'perched' in the cockpit. Hopefully this is not the same but it'll take sitting in one to find out...

No more power than my old Evo from 15 years ago, 200kg heavier and 50 grand! What a worthless hunk of junk.
Oh wait....the dashboard plastics on this are so much softer! What an amazing car!

Your evo would have been around £45k new in 2006 which works out £69,545.29 in todays money.
This audi is a bargain!

If they were still made, how much do you think a new Evo would cost? Not forgetting that the interiors were pretty much at the bottom of the priority list for these cars?Oh wait....the dashboard plastics on this are so much softer! What an amazing car!
As others have said though, they are in a different league compared to fast Audi hatchbacks/small saloons.
We will see how this new one fairs on the twisties and tracks. I'm still not convinced I'd want to own another one. They'll need to sharpen up the steering for a start!

The steering was one of my bugbears too, and it didn't really feel like it was connected to the front wheels being fair. Plus it was miles too light for my taste as well, so that didn't help either. I'm not anti 4wd either(I really liked my XR4x4s and the Xdrive system in the X5 4.8iS I had), but Audi do seem to make a mess of their 4wd systems(well the one I tried was poor anyway) for me. I believe that the 4wd system in the R8 is decent though from what I read.

Configurator went live on Audi Germany yesterday, so hopefully we're not a million miles away. Could do with a few more colour options, though.I considered the last RS3 Saloon but I felt like the seat would not go low enough for me. I felt really 'perched' in the cockpit. Very tempted by this. I've only got the one parking space in Central London, and this feels like it ticks a lot of boxes if you're only going to have one car. As fast as you'd ever need on the road, good in all weathers, decent infotainment, four doors and a decent sized boot if you opt for the Sportback. Hopefully it's going to be fun to drive!
