It would be interesting to find out how many of the cars on show have been owned long term by the current owner (or their family) rather than just bought recently for use as a classic/show car.
“Ideal for FoTU” is a new phrase creeping into classic car ads alongside “time warp car” or “appreciating investment”.

There are definitely some people who buy unexceptional cars just for shows.

I understand the Hagerty judges give preference to cars that have been owned for a long time and/or have sentimental value.

We have a Mk1 Mondeo sat in the mother in law's garage, one owner from new (my father in law), on about 20k if I remember correctly, perfect condition and absolutely original, from what I can tell, apparently he only had the (original) tyres and bulbs replaced at its final MOT before he passed away because they had perished!

She is starting to think about having it taken away for scrap soon but I keep thinking about it, unfortunately I'm not even remotely mechanically minded but I'd love to know if it was in any way cost-effective to 'recommission' it.

I imagine with lockdown and drastically decreased miles, and a future of working from home for many, that sort of thing has appealed to a few people. We no longer need two 'on the button' cars so a fun project is certainly more viable than it ever was before, it's a bonus that there is now a community for that sort of thing.

That sounds like a real gem. I hope you get to save it.

I only found out from the old lady who lived next to my folks that she let her late husband's Omega 3-Litre Elite go. It was immaculate, save for a bump on a door - which had been his prompt - at age 90 - to give up driving.

When he died, I have to confess that one of my first thoughts was about his car. I thought it inappropriate to ask to buy it. It was a year or so later when I noticed the garage was empty that I asked her.

She was annoyed I'd not asked sooner as she sold it to a dealer/scrapman and told me I could have had it for nothing if she'd known. As a kid I used to wash and polish his cars for a bit of pocket money. Always Vauxhalls, always a new one every August 1st until he retired and kept them for 5-10 years or so."Alan would have loved you to get his last car.". She said. "Silly boy being all polite and not wanting to ask.,"

From a financial perspective it makes sense to advertise it on specialist Ford forums. Better the money in your pockets than those of a scrap man that punts it on.

Ooh a Toyota tercel. They seemed oddly cool to my eight year old brain.

I hardly think an XJ6, a Bentley or a Granada Coupe are “bland”, though.

My mate had a 214 I think, the one based on a Honda. Not the bible shape that came later. Great car

I had a 1990 214 SLi as my one and only company car in 1992.

It was a better option at the time tax-wise than the two 1.8 Sierra alternatives I was offered at the time - I quite liked it.

But sadly when I got made redundant within a year they made me give it back!
