I sat through the results bit.
The best fuel for power and ignition advance curve was the Tesco 99 RON. Peak was barely any better but the ECU could advance timing noticeably more when it was coming on boost, right at the bit where things go bang if you get it wrong.
Second best was shell 99 ron which made 1bhp less and had a slightly more restricted ignition advance, so basically same peak but a touch less power in the mid range
Esso 99 third, less advance again than the 1st two and it lost 5bhp peak. He wasn't very nice about it.
BP Ultimate 4th and was well off Tesco for ignition, ~15bhp down in the mid range when it came on boost, but had the same peak power as Esso.
The 95 RON was ste.
How relevant this is to a non tuned car is debatable, but the fact that the Tesco fuel performed best and is the cheapest makes it an obvious choice.
It'd be interesting to see an economy test, especially given the zero ethanol content of the Esso, but that's a much much harder and more time consuming test to carry out repeatably and meaningfully.
youtube is blocked where i am currently so cannot view but bp is 97 ron is it not, they dont do a 99.The best fuel for power and ignition advance curve was the Tesco 99 RON. I've no idea, but Jet have always been one of the cheapest for Regular petrol since the 70s - there just aren't too many of them about now.
Although their E5 is only 97 RON like BP, etc.
yeah was aware 97 ron, i never fill up there unless desperate unless i'm in a car it doesnt matter, but always amazes be how cheap they are comparatively.Although their E5 is only 97 RON like BP, etc.
Theres a fair few around in EA/Essex still.
Total also back i noticed the other day on the A11 near Cambridge, think their excellium was 99 ron.

For those of you in East Anglia/Essex what are you paying for Monentum?
I see comments of 1.449 on here, but my local Tesco is 1.509 for E10!
Cheers
it varies within 15m radius. maldon tesco is typically a few pence higher for example than other tesco stations in that radius. no idea why.I see comments of 1.449 on here, but my local Tesco is 1.509 for E10!

Thanks, I sadly perhaps find it interesting.
For 30 odd years it’s been fairly consistent, now it’s all over the shop.
i used to use the app/website that told you the local prices, but typically found it to be out of date price wise. not sure if any sites or apps which accurately do that now, i know waze has a function on it but never tested it and its reliant on user data so not reliable i suspect. For 30 odd years it’s been fairly consistent, now it’s all over the shop.
the app/site of should give you an indication of variance at least even if not accurate as of today.

Waze is always quite accurate, provided the 'last updated' isn't a week ago or whatever. In a busy area (city, large town) it tends to be pretty up to date across the board, though smaller/dearer garages usually go longer between updates simply because people tend to avoid visiting them in the first place! the app/site of should give you an indication of variance at least even if not accurate as of today.
As for Tesco, they're always 7ppl dearer for M99 than boggo unleaded, so 'cheaper' areas of the country will naturally have cheaper M99. I still lament Costco switching over to 97 RON, as their 99 was the cheapest in the country by a decent margin at the time. Nowadays, I can often source M99 for around the same price as their inflated 97 RON prices (which can be V-Power levels higher than their 95 RON), so not the bargain they used to be.
So between Shell and Esso and V Power and Synergy Supreme what's the view on the "best" fuel for a brand new car but with a small 1.5L engine where I just want to keep it running as cleanly and economically as possible?
Where I live we get gouged for V Power but oddly Esso are quite cheap.

No Tesco?
There is but I got the impression Momentum was more about power and being "green" fuel than cleaning?Or Shell and Esso just have very good marketing teams

Better combustion and better power and more ignition advance and better knock protection are all going to give you better economy. The cleaning is less relevant I'd say unless you plan on keeping the car for 10 years. But even then you could just add some cleaner every now and again. So as Tesco 99 is cheaper and burns better I'd choose that every time.
Thank you Tesco Momentum 99 157.9p
Esso Synergy Supreme 163.3p
Shell V Power 171.9p
Seems quite the spread in price!
