The Joy of Running an Old Shed (Vol 2)
Discussion
Anyway, in other news, I'm thinking of running a Boxster 2.7 as a shed. One has come up locally. 150k miles, but in the pics looks decent, with a bit of money spent on it. For sale, as he can't keep a convertible through the winter. But I have just hired a very large covered farmers barn.....
It's on a W reg, so year 2000, and is for sale for £2k, as a good runner.
Tempted.
What say you lot?

I've been running a similar, albeit much lower mileage, 2.7 Boxster 986 since 2015.
Not sure if I've been lucky but it's been great. It gets serviced annually by my local garage and has only needed a couple of things outside of normal maintenance - new radiators and a new alternator. Can't remember how much they were to fix but nothing outrageous.
It's still a great car to drive, comfortable enough to drive all day but sharp enough to have fun. The flat six isn't particularly fast these days but that just means you can enjoy it wailing away without getting to antisocial speeds.
No idea how much they're going for these days but mine was £6k back then as a clean low miler. Highly recommended.

Anyone able to offer some shed advice? I've found a Saab 9-3 estate for sale locally really cheap, the add states it's had the "DPF mapped out" and "EGR blanked off" as well as a "swirl flap delete", I'm tempted to get this as a run about for my parents but worried it wouldn't get through an MOT, would this require a "friendly MOT tester"?
It'll be fine. . Get a petrol engined car for your parents to run around in.

Heavy clutch means it's starting to go.
Check that the windows drop properly and raise properly when you open/close the door. Otherwise it'll leak at the top of the windscreen every time it rains. Cure is a new window regulator (the Chinese ebay ones don't do the job properly and let it leak, in my experience).
People will always tell you about IMS bearing failures. I think it has likely been changed by this age and mileage, or it's the older dual-row type that doesn't fail.
ARB drop links are a pain but with high heat they come out.
Lower arms are pretty much a consumable
Brake lines go rusty along the sill but they're a long straight piece so no big deal to change
Inner CV boots crack
Handbrake cables snap
Check the window in the roof for cracking and the stitching around it for splits. When you open it, do the 'Boxster chop'. If it still has the original roof with plastic rear window, leave it closed as much as possible over winter so it doesn't crease and then split when opened.

It’s fairly common over here. A lot of people run no dpf especially on something slightly older. A lot cheaper than a replacement for them, short journeys are no longer a problem and I’ve yet to hear of anyone failing mot. I can see why they would do it. Personally I’d rather run petrol.Get a petrol engined car for your parents to run around in.

Our 2005 Lexus RX300 (2nd gen) on 140,000 miles just flew through its MoT.
We've kept on top of timing belt etc, and treated it this year to a fresh change of gearbox oil on top of the usual service items.
It's honestly wonderful, smooth, relaxing and just feels solid as a rock. We paid £3k for it 4 years ago, and it's taken us to the Alps multiple times, along with all over the country. We have fallen in love with 'Lexi' and newer cars just don't tempt us to replace the 'family' car.
I even used a DA and fully restored the paint, there's a lovely fleck in the blue.
The car is Blue over cream interior, with seemingly every option ticked included screens in the headrests.
Long live Lexi the Shed.

Bagged this today for £600. It's a Sharan 1.8T Carat so has the heated leather and alcantara, oddly has no cruise control though which even the base spec Alhambras had. The ML has been gone so long that I kind of forgot about it, the plan is to run them both side by side for the next week and see which I prefer then dump the other on eBay. I have a boost leak to sort on the Sharan and a weird knock on the front left which sounds like loose plastic, drivers window motor needs looking at too. It has working front and rear parking sensors though which is nice. It's also LPG converted which I will never use

Presumably you can retro fit cruise to these? They often have all the same cables in and you just buy a switch and then code it in. I also wonder if there's anyone in the world today who's ever made their money back on their LPG conversion

I still have some Alhambra PTSD and I'm always wary of cars that came from ropey backstreets in Bradford, but I am currently happy. I'm sure I can sell the seats and scrap it for close to what I paid if it goes tits upp4cks said:

Likely but it sits happy enough it 6th and I rarely use cruise control anyway. I also wonder if there's anyone in the world today who's ever made their money back on their LPG conversion
We'll my trustee Mondeo Ghia estate might have run its course, possible fuel pump failure imminent.
Bought for 1100 quid three years ago, it's done 55-60 mpg for 20K miles, had a wheel bearing, two injectors, pair of tyres and I think that's it ?! It's been a good drive and better than I thought for the price I paid.
When I look at similar cars now they seem to be more expensive ?!
Might be worth fixing it after all !!

Anything else wrong with it? If not then may well be worth fixing. Bought for 1100 quid three years ago, it's done 55-60 mpg for 20K miles, had a wheel bearing, two injectors, pair of tyres and I think that's it ?! It's been a good drive and better than I thought for the price I paid.

Well it needs two injectors as well but recon ones are 100 quid each and I can change those.Thing is I've got engine oil in the diesel.
There's a seal in the fuel pump which could be breaking down, might be a sign of the whole pump breaking down which they have a history of doing. Then it's metal particles that go through the whole fuel system.
I might attempt a repair and see if I can remove the fuel pump to replace the seal. I'd keep it going if it was this.

Fuel pump should be quite a minor part to replace and probably a better bet financially/risk then swapping for a different car.Bought for 1100 quid three years ago, it's done 55-60 mpg for 20K miles, had a wheel bearing, two injectors, pair of tyres and I think that's it ?! I’d recommend getting it done ASAP. As it will likely fail suddenly, well mine stuttered one day and threw up a code, the then felt fine, I took it for a test drive the next day and it failed completely in less than a mile. Had to get recovered.
