Was you not tempted to call it a day and buy another shed?
Yes and no. I've tried three times to replace it but nothing tickles my fancy. I looked at a V70R off eBay around Xmas which was lovely but it went for more than I expected.

I love the 5cyl noise, the fact it's a manual, the black interior - both of which are hard to come by as they're mostly automatic and with cream/brown interiors. I would consider replacing it with another one on less miles but to find one in this spec is tough. Plus they seem to be rising in value so I'd be paying considerably more now, again my reasoning behind coughing up the money to fix it. I'd likely get £1500 for it so in essence it's not lost money I suppose.

I very nearly went for an Octavia VRS estate in summer 2020 but it felt tiny compared to the Ovlov.

Stuck a set of part worn Continentals on the Saab shed today. £160 including fitting, can’t really complain.

Starting to do my research on the diesel equivalent of my shed before I fully decide if it’s worth the switch. My annual miles are gradually increasing and I’m fed up of both the fuel economy and VED on the current shed

A sound investment, then.

Enjoy!

Well, after 2.5 years of shedding, mine has gone to its new home today.

Final analysis for this shed:

I love to see it. I have similar records for keeping track.

So I make that around 40 quid a week all in if my maths are correct. Good shedding that and to my mind far more satisfying than renting a new car.

A bit under, and I've not yet included the tax or insurance refund - although I realised depreciation isn't showing either (at £325 for 2.5 years). The car has actually worked turned in a profit, as I claimed more in business mileage in the car than the total cost of ownership! I'm £610 up after 2.5 years, despite not doing any business miles in the last ten months.

As much as I love shedding, I've bought a brand new car to replace this one; albeit bargain basement motoring as it's a new Dacia Sandero! Until that is delivered, I need to recalibrate my understanding of costs of motoring, as I'll be using my second car to daily which, with a 4.0 supercharged V8, costs several multiples of my shed to run. Hopefully this will only be 2-3 weeks at most.
Still good shedding. I reckon that my generous mileage allowance has easily paid for my shed and then some.

Depending how long you keep the Sandero you can make that work out as cheep as sheding.
Depreciaiton alone ive lost the grand some of a grand over 6 years on my panda which i brought at 2 years old for a few grands.

After 20 years of shedding, five of which are in my current shed I have done the same. I have gone for a stepway essential in white as I didn't really want to pay another £1600 for some toys that I don't want and have more chance of going wrong in the future. White also saves another £590 over metallic.

I plan on keeping it forever, my current shed is 15 years old so I don't see why this one won't last at least as long.

I am in Greater London in the proposed Ulez zone so the current shed would have to go when that is introduced anyway. I was looking at spending £5000 on something petrol and cheap to run and I was just not prepared to pay the asking prices. Using man maths the Sandero is £72 a month if you put down £5k and that basically means I don't have to think about the car for three years as it has 3 years warranty and breakdown cover. No mot for 3 years and two years free servicing.

Out or interest, how long have you had to wait for your car as I am currently looking at an early October delivery date.

About a year ago I read that average UK motoring bills worked out to a tad over 40p per mile. Your shed (& record keeping) have served you very well.

Been shedding since last October, ran two cars since then (only replaced shed #1 due to impracticality) both below £1k purchase price - and I am completely hooked on this "lifestyle" choice, as that's what it is to me, can't be arsed with the worry and losing money on anything else

Going to see how much money I can save over the next 5 years, kind of my 5 year plan.

Since October, I have stuck loads away, soon accumulates, think I need to mention this way of living on the "Finance - Saving money" thread smile

Never slept so well since!

I'm about to ditch our horrendous 61 plate Toyota Verso D4D for a Dacia Jogger (well, in 6 months time). This dreadful Toyota has cost us a DPF, turbo cleanup, 4 injectors, horn and heater matrix in 4 years. Absolutely horrendous.

In contrast, my Kia Ceed SW on a 59 plate has been superb over 7 years of ownership. Two major problems...clutch (previous owner was an old boy who obviously rode it to death...he only did 19k miles but murdered it!). Clutch was £1600!! Then the gearbox failed. Replacement from the scrappy fitted for £800. So £2400 in 7 years is not bad going.

It's the 1.6 CRDI in 3 trim, lovely engine.

Over the last 3 years of owning this current shed I've managed to put an extra 30 grand away towards my early retirement, the savings from this kind of motoring and it's accompanying lifestyle changes are staggering.

The only car I've ever been car sick in was a hire Verso. Without a doubt the worst car I've ever been on a journey in.

Quick £1150 V70 update at 16 months ownership.

In the last month I’ve done Maidenhead & back twice, Warwick & back, Anglesey and Goodwood from North Wales,
Averaging 34mpg (petrol/auto)
Service & MOT due end of June, has a fuel leak from the filler so needs replacing, only about £20 but tank out by the look of it & needs front drip links doing.
Need a lower rear light unit as water ingress .
Just bought & fitted a Bluetooth plugin for £32 and it’s brilliant, full steaming and phone compatibility.

Back into the world of work this month so company car time again but will be keeping the V70 as excluding fuel it costs less than £70 pcm insurance/RFL and AA so with keeping for dog stuff and general use

And I'm here to tell you that when you achieve financial security and the freedom of early retirement you'll thank your younger self a million times over for making the choices in life that enabled you to do so. smile

It is certainly a financial regret that instead of buying a house aged 21 I built a kit car.
That almost certainly cost me 150K - the amount my 1st house had gone up in price in the time it took to build the car.

(I ignore the actual cost of building the car since I still own it)

I think your water Ingress and steaming could be your drip links.

Mixed feelings for the shed lately... All put back together, car back on 4 wheels after 3 weekends of work on it (not full time at all, more like "part time" biggrin). I went for a test drive, and it looks like the culprit of my front axle noises was NOT the ball joints I just changed :/ (didn't do the upper left, after the hassle of the upper right, when both were in fact fine). My next suspect are the lower arms, but that will wait for some motivation...

From left to right: left inner bearing of lower ball joint, upper right ball joint (after the fight), right inner bearing of lower ball joint, 1 out 3 fixation screw for the lower ball joint (broke at 65Nm, when it should be screwed at 70Nm), 1/2 female to 3/8 male which broke on saturday evening)

To cheer me up (and not binning it), I did updated the spreadsheet I have for it:

Maintenance cost are a bit high due to the new clutch. This year will be high too, considering the ball joints, timing belt and potentially the lower arms/whisbone. Still, at 33p a mile, it is not too bad...
Also, to calculate per month a "PCP equivalent" cost, I sum up "Parking + Tax" + "Maintenance" + "Devalutation" + 1/3 of petrol (assuming a recent car would give me better MPG), I am at £135 a month
=> Which PCP deal could get me at least a hatchback for £135 a month and 10 000 miles a year? Not much. So she stays in cool
