There is still load of cheap cars way below <£1500, posted this a while back, just can't be fussy at all what might turn up.
Just done another autotrader search, (20 mile radius, £1500 MAX, petrol and diesel) there is 86 cars available, yeah some rough ones cosmetically and odd thing not working, but many from my very little time looking have MOT's.
Are shedders getting too picky these days?
Interestingly there are only 9 within 20 miles of my postcode, and that's Glasgow, the 4th most populated city in the UK! Although not a shed, i've just picked up a 2014 Fiat Panda 1.2 and I have to say, it's an absolute joy to be driving around in something so cheap to run, and so basic.

19 for me if I limit VED to £30 or less (don't see the point buying a cheap car and then paying £300+ a year on VED). Goes to 229 if I don't limit on VED, lots of dross to sift through looking at the first few pages of results.

Audi TT for £1,500
Some damage but it doesn't look too bad all things considered
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303305...
Civic 2.2 for £1,450
These are meant to be good engines I believe?

Putting some hard miles on the Vecshed has took its toll, did think it was getting a little noisy underneath - so yeah, bushes and trailing arms are tired, will get rectified come MOT time in September, if needs be.
Just had oil service and stuck some new spark plugs on it and couple of rear pads, plus oil leak fixed - noticeable difference in pickup now with the engine, must of been way overdue those plugs, the old girl is still purring, another 500 miles to stick on it next week, bit of downtime this week for it.

Only 6 are private sales
Cheapest is £590 for a 307 CC with front end damage, most stuff up to £1250 seems to be listed as spares or repairs or lists a significant problem.
I enjoy shedding very much, but don't want to do it in a bland hatchback just because its cheap. Given up on auctions as the local is BCA who seem to charge a fortune in buyers fees - so now hunt in FB marketplace and Gumtree which is another fun experience.
Best options i would look at if buying now -
Early VW Beetle for £1495 https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202301163...
2007 Mini Cooper Convertible also £1495 https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202304035...
Low mileage Pug 106 - but "recently bought, now up for sale" is a red flag https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303315...

Son was probably shocked at how old, basic and unrefined "old" cars feel compared to something even remotely modern. Has that car even got power steering?I have to say, I wouldn't even want to drive that.

Not quite, the same search on AT for me throws up 146 results, mostly in the West Midlands or Burton on Trent. 16 with less than £30 road tax too...Ranging from 129k '06 vectra 1.8 for £1250 to an 100k 03 volvo c70 soft top for £1350 to an 134k 05 320d touring for £950.

Don't forget it's the start of the month, so prices will be a bit higher than normal. Wait until the 20th, and prices will be a bit lower, as those with no money either have to sell cars, or can't aford to buy them.
As ever, it's a game of patience and perseverance. Keep looking, every night, and they shall appear.

20 mile radius, £1500 budget - 6 cars
My pick would be the 56 plate 1.4 clio with 141k on the clock for £975. Madness,My first car was a 52 plate clio which was 12 years old at the time and had 80k on the clock, was only £25 more.
Mighty insignia hasn't blown up yet and made it to Manchester and back at the weekend (100 mile each way)with no drama which is a result, the last 2 times we went in the caddy required a breakdown call
Also got the wheel wobble sorted... for just shy of a tenner!

Maybe I should add to this, not quite shed budget but with the cost of cars these days and with shed being a state of mind, then I consider this to be "shed".
Focus estate, bought last year off a fellow PHer ( ) for a smidge under £2500. Top spec, 2.0 diesel and auto box. Heated seats, heated windscreen, climate, cruise etc. Just under 160,000 on the clock.
The gearbox unfortunately appears to be designed for an entirely different car to the engine, the gearing is very very wrong resulting in sub 40mpg on the motorway - pretty shocking when my previous Audi with an equivalent engine did nearly 50mpg, or 25% more mpg! I've seriously considered getting rid of it, but for the money it's a good car and so I will just put up with the crap fuel consumption. It's perfect as a tip car, has towbar for trailers, and being an auto very easy to drive. With the blacked out windows then it's smart enough to daily and secure enough to leave things in the back of.
In 8 or 9 months it's had a new turbo pipe, and the bluetooth module needed replacing - £700 from Ford or £30 from Ebay! When it's cold you need to let the gearbox warm up for a min or 2 otherwise it throws an error code, and when it gets really cold the the gearbox "bounces" around between 3rd and 4th and 30mph until it warms up a bit, which is really annoying. Solution being to go a bit faster
With the increasing number of ULEZ zones it would be nice to have something petrol, sporty and ULEZ compliant to run alongside shed.

387. I am in Surrey, 20 miles will include London.
360 for me too, but that includes much of Birmingham, Coventry and Nuneaton, and you'd be fking brave to buy a cheap car from any of those places... A few highlights....
2009 BMW 318d in nice blue colour https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303245...
2008 Merc C class being sold because it won't pass an MOT with the air bag light on. Could be a good motor if you can fix the problem https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303225...
1999 Alfa GTV with 6 months MOT https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303085...
2005 ever dependable Audi A4 with 1.9PD engine and 12 months MOT. Ultimate shedding https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303285...
