219,000 miles now on the old Audi A2 TDi and just been serviced again by me through the week. 85,000 miles with us in just over 4 years. Serviced every 10,000 miles and seems to be doing fine.
Great mileage that on the little A2, just keep it going for as along as you can smile

What economy you seeing out of this? Has it caused you any grief 'diesel' wise over the 4 years?

I like the idea of this as a van biggrin

Yesterday, I collected my son's Scirocco (59 reg, 2.0 petrol/manual) from the garage post-service inc. 2 new front tyres.

It's done 114k and I think he paid about £4k for it a few months ago.

Apart from being a bit ordinary in second, it went really well. Currently in a BMW phase, I have been toying with getting a Z4 coupe to replace my 645. I'm not sure I would get that much more for my extra few grand.

Other than wear n tear items like wheel bearings, and brakes (discs don’t seem to last like they used to!), it’s been absolutely great. In fact, I’d jump in it and take it anywhere.

I seem to remember the problem with A2s is their aluminium bodywork and the expense of repair should you be unfortunate enough to damage it. Otherwise, great motors

Could be if it takes a knock. Mind you, at such a low value they’re probably not repairing. Still some decent ones around for not a lot of money 😊

They were - my sister had one when they were new and someone ran into her at some traffic lights. It got repaired but it took ages to come back - like 6 months before she was back in it again.

It was a great little car, and they ran it for another couple of years before moving it on - just don't crash them smile

Joyfully little to report on the Mondeo.

One of the rear window regulators was broken when I bought the car - replacement was £19.95 delivered, and not a hard fix. One happy improvement in cars from the '80's is that the door internals on the Mondeo aren't sharp. I recall that my arms used to looks as though I'd been juggling cats after replacing a window on the 309, and similar on my Mk1 Fiesta, but now some thought seems to be given to the fact that down the line, someone will be sticking their arms into the door cavities.

One of the headlights was wet inside, so dried that out and put it back, and it was wet again within the week. Dried it again and ran some clear silicone along the join for the lens, and that's fixed it.

One of the rear lights was also wet, and this one was more of a pain as it had silicone around it in completely ineffectual places - so cleaned what I could of that off. The leakage was where the light unit meets the body at the back of the unit, and I didn't want to silicone there as it would be a pain to get if off again. Looking at what I had in the garage, I gave the sealing area a spray with Waxoyl and put it back together while the Waxoyl was still wet, that's now been dry since.

Other than that I've given it a service (oil, filter, air filter, and cabin filter). The oil capacity is annoyingly just over 5L, so an extra can needed for this first service, but subsequent ones will only need one can plus a top-up from what I've got left over. The service book is stamped up so far, but as I don't have receipts and don't know what was done when, I prefer to do it all and know where I stand.

I had to chuckle at the cabin filter though. Yes it's a pig to get to (common theme here), but it looks as though it was screwed-up to get it in last time, to the extent that I'm surprised it had filtered out any of the crap that it did. Still the garage could honestly tick the box to say it had been changed (whenever that was)...

I didn't spot that the tyre treads are cracking when I bought it. They are old(ish) but not ancient (2018/19 manufacture) and have 3-4mm tread, but I've read elsewhere that Avon's have a habit of perishing prematurely. Kumho are on promotion at ATS this month, so will be going on all round at more than I hoped to be spending this early on.

These Sciroccos are quite temptingly cheap for what you get, I reckon. I recently drove a Mk5 Golf GTI for the first time and I think that has the same engine (EA888??) Like you I felt it went really well. Its got 200PS and weighs around 1400KG but felt a whole heap quicker than my wife's Fiesta ST150 which on paper isn't that far behind on power to weight....(about 10 BHP/ton) and I remember one of the EVO writers saying his own MK5 GTI (stock) was as quick as the MK8 Fiesta ST he was running at the time....

I've got 1 year left of my EV PCP then I'm re-joining the shedding masses! I've already finished eBay.

I need to spend some time and money on the inherited Jazz.

- The windscreen washers don't really work. I think its the pump but need to investigate more

- The rear windows dont work. As its both windows I suspect a fuse but as I dont sit in the back it hasn't bothered me.

- Screeching on rear left wheel. I have a feeling its a sticky caliper, but could also be a break pad. I know on the Civic's of this era have a brake wear indicator which makes a similar noise when low.

- No radio as I disconnected the battery to clear a EML code and cannot find the code biggrin

Very happy to hear that, more the better, its better for the environment and bank balance biggrin

Cant see me ever going back to running newer car (nevermind renting one) since being on this thread, completely disfranchised my entire views on cars now - why the return if you don't mind me asking, any preference on what "tickles your pickle" for a shed comeback?

Time I got in the shed and went to muck out my stable.
And the car, while I've got wheelbarrow and pitchfork handy.
The stable yard is a mudfest and I don't care smile

Agreed, when you do the sums of buying a new car compared to using that money to overpay on your mortgage it is scary.

I have a mortgage renewal in front of me, it states "This means you will pay back £2.85 for every £1 borrowed."

So if I spent £30K buying a new car as opposed to paying £30K off my mortgage that car would actually cost me £85,500 in the long run.

Decided against the S80 in the end, instead I'm picking up a 2014 Mondeo Titanium X 2.0 diesel at the weekend. 120k, new clutch, timing belt done, for £2.5k. Very happy with that result and quite looking forward to having a shed again.

Shed Astra H went straight through MOT yesterday which is good. Just small advisories which will get done, the oil cover gasket leak which plagues the 1.6 petrol model and has been a small issue since we got the car. The driver employed by the garage said he was surprised how nicely it drove, "like a new car". Everyone who drives the unassuming Astra expects it to be a heap but comes away saying stuff like "that is such a sweet driving car". Honestly, if it wasnt for the fact that its going back to my daughter this August, I would seriously considering keeping it myself and selling my F30 3 series!

That's some brave bills on a 10 year old TDCI ! Injectors, EGR, DPF, DMF are known to throw up gigantic bills on those.
