Following on from the XJR-8 MOT this is the list of what requires addressing.
- Nearside Front Brake pipe excessively corroded (1.1.11 (c))
- Nearside Rear Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords (5.2.3 (d) (i))
- Nearside Front Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced Above spring mounting area (6.1.1 (c) (i))
- Nearside Front Floor excessively deteriorated Within 30cm of seat mountings (6.2.4 (a) (i))
- Nearside Rear Floor excessively deteriorated (6.2.4 (a) (i))
- Offside Front Floor excessively deteriorated Within 30cm of seat mountings (6.2.4 (a) (i))
- Nearside Rear Subframe mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength (5.3.6 (a) (i))
- Offside Rear Subframe mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength (5.3.6 (a) (i))
To explain that in more detail, the top two are approx 3 inches square of corrosion directly behind the front shock absorbers, so inner arches essentially.
The rest are holes in the sills, in various places from the front to the rear.
The N/S/R wheel arch is also corroded but simple an aesthetic issue, rather than an MOT one.
Drove it home this evening and it drove very nicely.
So current Plan A is to see if my welding friend fancies the gig.
Plan B, if he can't/doesn't want to is to return to the original Plan A and now have everything I need to have a supercharged V8 I can put in a frame on a trailer and run up whenever I like.
If anyone on thread wants to save me about 250 hours worth of work, the car owes me £2480 sat on my drive.
Hmm, I know I piped up earlier in the thread (I think Krikkit was ahead of me anyway) but that does sound like a chunk of work to put right, with possibly more once you start cutting out the visible stuff. Think I'll swerve this one, thanks.- Nearside Front Brake pipe excessively corroded (1.1.11 (c))

Just a heads up but my new purchase now seems to be on a boat somewhere due for arrival in late Jan early Feb so just putting it out there for fellow bargists that my LS460 will likely be going up for sale sometime in Jan. A bit premature to let you fine folk know but in case anyone's interested let me know and I'll send you some details. Will be within thread budget
Hello bargeists,
I am coming to the end of my company car lease, and I am thinking of opting out and taking an allowance. IN order to make this allowance work in my favor, I was planning on buying something like an old S class/7series/LS etc and basically pocketing the cash i get from my company. I do 20-30k a year. Would buying an old barge be a silly thing to do given the amount of work it would be put through? anyone do similar miles in theirs?

Looked good at first. Low mileage and probably very clean underneath but the more I looked at the pictures the more it made me wonder if it's clocked.. in Japan or UK. And funny thing, there's literally a sticker in one of the pictures showing when belt was done, 2020 at 82km. How is it on 50k ish km in UK but then add the fact that interior looks really tired and beat up..wonder what real milage is like. No surprise it has not sold.
I agree, is it an import? I would love to see the mot history pre 2006, and no service history - convenient! It has more faults than a typical LS with 3 times that mileage. Ad says '4 brand new tyres fitted on 27/11/2021'Looked good at first. Look at the tyres, interesting name for something round.
It's a good shed of the week at best. Poor thing.

That’s fair enough with 12 months mot
I thought so. Always wanted to have one at some point so I thought at £500 there's no risk. Absolute worst ways I'll make a lot breaking it but I do hope it has some decent life left in it.

Problem is the range is woeful, actually putting your foot down the range just disappears.
We had one for a short time and it could hardly get from Chester - Abersoch - Chester which is appx 180 miles against a claimed 265.
This was in summer at 85-95 mph on the A55 and normal speed elsewhere.
Everything else about it was pretty much C / E Class, ours was the PP+ so had all the toys too, fantastic.
Miles better than any Model 3 or Model S.
In other news I’ve got a new job down in Dorset, depending on the offer etc I’m going to have to commute Chester - Dorset (500 miles) a week.
If anyone is genuinely interested in a Maserati QP GT Sport 54k miles and Full Ferrari Service History (bi-annual), £15k spent the last few years, it’ll be available about March then let me know, Navy / Cream and then carbon trim.
I did a work trip this week for 190 miles, cost £90 in fuel, 23mpg and work reimbursed me £78, which isn’t ideal.
Going to get something diesel, maybe a barge qualifying S Class for those miles and something fun for when I’m home.
My answer to the 500 mile a week commute has been a Range Rover. Totally relaxing to drive and from what I can tell pretty reliable. We had one for a short time and it could hardly get from Chester - Abersoch - Chester which is appx 180 miles against a claimed 265.

The latest one has given me 35mpg on my drive which makes it by far the most economical car I have ever owned (EVs aside)

Someone who can weld and has the time could do this easily and cheaply enough sadly I don't have the time
Is it cheap and easy though?I get that if it's just a sill or other singular panels need sewing up, but from that fail sheet that car is going to need at the very least the rear subframe dropping and sections of floor making up from scratch.
It's going to spend at least a week on a 2 poster ramp in a proper workshop, or many, many, many weekends (and swear words) by an avid DIYer in jack stands. It's hard to see it worth saving (sadly)
