There was a Practical Classics letter I read last night that was on either one of these I think (might have been a different era RR or Bentley, but it was 1989) where the guy said adding up all his running costs over three years and it was the equivalent to buying a brand new Fiesta, and so it was therefore a good deal. Given a new Fiesta is what 20/25k nowadays I am sure a bit of man maths was involved in justifying that ...

Fellow bargeists, I am in a bit of a quandry. I rather foolishly promised to the politburo to slim down the current fleet a bit by replacing the ageing 530d tourer and 2003 XJR with a 4 year old S4 avant. I work from home, so it seemed relatively sensible to replace two dailies with one that covers both bases - I need an estate for bikes and general stuff.

However, I drove the XJR again at the weekend for the first time this year and fell in love with it again. I'd like to keep it, Mrs wants it gone due to my rash promise. Space is at a bit of a premium, 4 in the garage, some on the drive, one in a mate's shed etc. 530d has already gone so S4 would be one-in, one-out.

Advice on how to proceed? Either by someone offering me £££ for the XJR or how to placate the Mrs...
I think you need to lay down the law. It's the XJR or her. That'll learn her and she'll thank her lucky stars. Keep the XJR.

In the closing pages of this volume, what are the abiding memories?

Speckled Jim's JDM fertility-affirming bus was eye-catching.
I heart my Alphard except for the terrible fuel economy so I think I’m going to get it gassed.

There we go. Yellow and red cards in one sentence. I’m the barge thread Joey Barton.
Nice reference that.
When he played at White Hart Lane for QPR, the home fans chanted "Your sister's your mum, Your sister's your mu-uum, Joey Barton, your sister's your mum" repeatedly for a solid five to ten minutes. He seemed to diminish in stature on the pitch.

Costing the same in servicing as an entire car in 3 years isn't great hehe

After 6 years....? Fuel? Insurance? I love man maths but sometimes.....

In my experience the straight 6 diesels are not bad, but they aren't a patch on a nice straight 6 petrol. I also don't like 4 cylinder petrol, I think most of them are naff too. 4 cylinder diesels are atrocious, I hate them.
I agree with all of these comments - I feel I would want either a boosted 6+ or 8+ cylinder N/A petrol to satisfy my desire to "make progress" but I HATE filling up. I normally have the choons turned up anyway, so whatever engine note is there gets drowned out.

Just buy the S4 and forget to sell the XJR; you're getting on a bit, tad forgetful, little bit absent-minded from time to time, you've sold one so no real change - it's worked for me a few times... biggrin

Popular in Eastern Europe, Malta, Azerbaijan / Georgia etc. Styling is..... challenging.

Baku in Azerbaijan is also home to quite a number of London Taxis, which was an slightly disconcerting discovery.
