One of my cousins is visiting next month for 10 days and is struggling to book a hire car, so I’m considering lending him my family car (my wife hasn’t given birth yet…).

The issue is that he’s British but resident in Italy. What options are there for insuring him - fully comp - on my car?

It looks my insurer won’t let me have a non-resident named driver on my policy. Is temporary insurance the best option for a non-resident or are there any other smart options?

Thanks.

I have not had an issue being a non-resident UK national and being added as a named driver (pre-COVID). Who's your insurer?

AXA. They’ve been very good so far. Their online system is great for getting quotes of different cars and switching cars, but had a ‘computer says no’ moment when I tried to add a non-resident named driver.

I imagine this is simply something they don’t offer, rather than being a ‘you have to phone us…’ thing, annoyingly.

I would try them on the phone. AXA always used to be helpful on the phone. When dealing with a claim...that's another matter. Worth a call IMHO

Just curious, did you explain you are a non-resident and have no UK credentials eg passport and did you explain which country your driving license is from?

there are 2 separate issues:
- residency. that's the big one, no matter what citizenship.
- licence issuing country, less of a problem but still is for many insurers and comes with uplift for many.

That's not what you said? A non-resident UK national would typically have a UK passport or some other proof of their UK status.

I'm assuming you mean a British person who has left the UK? Or are we talking at cross purposes?

UK insurers generally won't cover (or at least don't like covering) people who don't reside in the UK.

Obvious really, in the event of an incident/accident, dealing with people residing overseas can be beyond hard work.

We put on my in-laws who are Italian and live in Rome and there wasn't a problem. This was probably about 10 years ago though.

I think temporary insurance is the only way. My parents have tried adding me on their car insurance for when we visit the U.K. but the insurance company decline as I have a Polish licence. Car hire in the U.K. post brexit with a non GB licence is also prohibitively expensive to the point where it’s more cost effective to drive a 2 tonne v8 SUV 4000 kms and take 2 ferries than rent a corsa for 10 days.

Crazy really as I passed my test in the U.K. 20 years ago.

I’m with Saga and put my Sis and BIL (both 50+) on my wife’s Boxster as named drivers for the year….£7.30 total cost (non UK resident, non EU Licence) - was more than a little surprised to be honest!
