The Tesla comparison should really be the Model Y, and that’s the same price. Do Kia and Hyundai do EV SUVs?
I'd take either of them over this too. I know it's a tired cliche to refer to EVs as appliances, but to my eyes all of VW's ID things really do look like something you'd find in your kitchen, especially in white. Just dull boxes on wheels.

Surely they're not going to persist with the stupid touchscreen nonsense with the massive level of complaint in every single review? At some point they've got to take the hint.
Tesla have persisted with their touchscreen. Heck you’ve even got to use the screen to change the windscreen wiper speed.
Lots of people pile hate on the touchscreen, but I find it really good. And whilst you could try and prod the touchscreen in order to change wiper speed, you can also leave it set to "auto", which is fine 99% of the time and there's a physical button to wipe the windscreen for the 1%.

I really don't understand why VAG persist with trying to incorporate regen with the brakes. I was worried about getting used to regen on the accelerator but it takes about 20 minutes then you prefer it. Leave the brake pedal for the brakes and the accelerator for regen - easier, better feel, better solution.

Going out on a limb here, but VW will sell a magnitude more of these than Kia will EV6s, or Hyundai will Ioniq 5s. Current 9-12 month waiting lists for ID cars at the moment, whereas you can walk into a Hyundai dealership and have a brand new one next week.
We ordered one and it won't be here till Jan... bummer frown
Which one did you order?

Sadly, until the PR department can come up with something useful to say to fill the press release. 'The engine is in the front to allow passengers to enter the cabin more easily'. 'The windows are at the top of the doors so the driver doesn't have to bend down to see the outside'. 'The wheels are all round to provide improved ride comfort over triangular wheels' .
hehe

Couldn’t book a test drive for EV6, and my local dealership could not even give me a lead time on AWD GT line

you can't get AWD ones for 6 months.

They told me I could have an Air in about 2-3 weeks.

Will one of the manufacturers please make a decent EV without building everything around those fecking infotainment tablet things... They're horrible, completely unnecessary and are simply built in obsolescence.

By all means, make them an optional extra but I want 'proper' tactile buttons and a life that isn't permanently connected to the likes of Google, etc.
Can't see a u-turn in the future. Look at mobile phones, no-one reminisces about having physical buttons to dial numbers. HMIs outside of the automotive world are largely touchscreen too, it's what people are conditioned to.

I'll be honest, I don't mind the VW interface, and I've driven ID3s and an ID4 GTX, all on v2.3 of the software. It's heavily criticised, but I preferred it to the mega screen in the Tesla.

I don't understand why a lot of manufacturers feel the need to make electric cars look so different(read ugly) to ICE cars. I find it all very odd.

I personally like a car to be fairly easy on the eyes, whereas the majority of electric cars look like dog st for me.

When we placed the order we were advised there was a longer wait on the Matt Silver one (March) but other colours were available sooner. SWMBO liked the red, it was available early to mid Jan.

So we plonked the money down.

I had an expired licence(!) so couldn't test drive it till last weekend but the RWD one felt pretty decent, giggle quick in Sport so looking forward to the AWD one.

Good write-up. I personally prefer one-pedal driving with the regen on lift-off, and save the actual brake pedal for failures of anticipation, rather than trying to blend regen into the brake and be unsure how much precious energy you're throwing overboard as you slow down. I know preferences differ, though.

This feels like a significant moment, we've been waiting for the mainstream manufacturers to produce an EV to rival Tesla, now VW has and they've fallen short.

The charging issue is going to leave you ‘exasperated’ not ‘exacerbated’.
Indeed, plus a few typos:

"And it's the most power of all the ID.4s" - most powerful

"whether they operate the front of rear windows" - of -> or

"which makes just opening a window is unnecessarily complicated" - no 'is'

"I had to stopped the car and switch it back on again" - had to stop

"Even the VW\s charging rate of 125kWh looks comparatively poor" - apostrophe has been changed to a backslash

My neighbour just traded in a one year old XC90 for an ID4. When I asked why ....as they do some big miles and have a cottage in the Lakes... “we wanted to do our bit and save the planet.“

When pushed as to why a newly built EV was going to do that I was shocked. “Our kids are telling us and they are taught about climate change and the benefit of electric cars at school.“

Just like the demonisation of diesel, will be 15years until they say EV’s are making this worse. I’ll also like to hear of neighbours first journey to Cumbria and experiencing public charging plus refuge areas on smart motorways when it runs out of charge.

It also looks awful and generic

When pushed? You sound like a right laugh to be around! Interrogated by a neighbour for choosing a car they don't like, whatever next.

If that XC90 went straight to the crusher by year 4 you would still have emitted less CO2 by building and owning the new EV, by year 7 it will be half. Sound logic from your neighbour.

I'm not sure it's quite as clear set as that. In my case it's to replace a 2008 A4 petrol with 179,000 miles on it and I spend about £250 per month on fuel so going EV is a fairly obvious choice. It's just whether to get a more expensive car that can do my towing or keep a spare car (truck) and a cheaper EV.

The standard ID3 would pay for itself in fuel savings over about 10 years but can't tow anything, despite being exactly the same platform as the ID4 and Enyak.

I thought it was more like scrapping the existing ICE car and building and running an EV only became environmentally friendly after about something like 150k miles??

Its been posted on here before

"EVs that sit you too close to the floor" really ? Is that a joke ?
I'm still looking for one (Porsche Taycan excepted) where the sitting position is not too elevated. I drive a Tesla 3 and would love to have lower seats.

If you’re being pedantic you could also point out the charging rate should be kW, not kWh.

Compare it with a Model Y then. It's still expensive and slow. biggrin
