I'd never guess that was possible in a million years myself but as you claim that's the case it's well worth repeating for posterity and naturally begs the question if they're really that cheap then why isn't everybody driving one.

Well a lot of Porsche's have appreciated by over £10k these past couple of years so...

I've had 8 BMWs over the last 17 years, but my current two are from 2005 and 2006 with N/A straight 6 petrol engines and manual gearboxes that BMW stopped making years ago. They don't make anything I would want any more.

Loved the post about banger racing though as a trader mate of mine did quite a few meets at Arena Essex back in the 80s - but the tracks are all closing now.

I remember my Dad taking me to Wimbledon in the late 60s/early 70s and there was an all Jaguar banger race! :Probably helped the values of surviving MK2s and S-Types!

I think I hit a bit of a rut in the last few weeks and need somewhere to "unwind". I've got the project up for sale so that should go in the next week or so - then onto a more mundane "sports" car fitting of my mid-life status and not trying to build a hot-rod/track slag/drifter like I would like to have done 15yrs ago.

Then I can use it to drive off the beaten path and find all those country lanes and B roads I generally avoid in the family-wagon!

Chav association completely put me off the EP3 civic type r. When I had one back in 2005, I joined a couple of owners fora. It was populated by scrotes and racists.

Totally sullied my love for the car.

I generally like lightweight, sports coupes (think ‘90’s Jap cars) - these days the whole industry is straying from that formula and going down the tech / electric / heavy route. So I’m losing interest, too. Still, there are some nice new cars about.

Mercedes are leaving me cold too. Been a fan for as long as I can remember.

But now the configuration is a barren wasteland of black or white on grey interiors with little to no options.

Been lusting after a CL/ S Class Coupe and you can only seem to get them in instagram/forex scammer/footballer spec.

Used to just go for a drive for the sake of it, now there’s got to be a reason, used to go to lots of one make meets, as (classic) cars got more valuable more people started to get political / ‘famous’ cars appeared out of nowhere, the fun went out of that, so now it’s variety and quality over quantity.

I’d rather to 2 things in a year and do them at a higher level with a hotel stay than 10 ‘roughing’ it in a tent

I was into cars as a youth. Putting 2 litre Pinto engines in 1100 Escorts etc so you can tell how far back that was.

Then I got into bikes in my early 20’s and 4 wheels just faded into a form of transport. Even now I’ve still got a bike for fun and a bog standard Fiesta.

I suppose that makes me not really a petrolhead. Where I live either there’s no decent cars about or I never see them. Yesterday I saw a McLaren on the Edinburgh bypass which is the first car for ages that’s actually stood out. Everything else is either boy racer Corsa’s or BMW’s with big exhausts.

I watch both Moto GP and F1. Okay F1 has the tactics and the technical intricacies but on track I much prefer the bikes.

I’ve definitely fell out of love with modern cars and ‘static’ meets.

My love has been reignited in watching club motorsport & historics. Modern cars don’t even come close to a 60s GT car at full chat.

I’ve been trying to deny it but think I have to admit defeat and that I’m bored of driving. I’ve kept my Golf r32 as I love them but barely drive it once a month if I make myself.
More a trinket now had it 3 years.

The only time I enjoy it is when I get out on a proper road trip (Scotland borders 2020 we did) however I’ve got a young baby now so road trips involve our lovely old Caravelle!

Live in Chelmsford chav city and have had sporty Golfs since the early 2000s and always loved driving them around living here.

Have a company van for day to day and when the R32 gets a run I just get too annoyed with the attitude of other road users having to ‘beat me’ in whatever leased 2.0td they are in, it is constant!

Put a baby on board sticker in and still get cut up and run out of lanes all the time to the point id rather drive the van and save my blood pressure or any danger of my baby being in there at the time.

Get to dab the throttle once every 20 mins maybe for a grin and then it’s just driving a Golf.

I think it’s a case of I’m older and the roads and other drivers are worse now.

Really want to get a Nurburgring trip in at some point and that’s the only reason to keep it that I see now and that will be solo as my friends all gave up on doing anything fun years ago.

Get rid and get a motorbike I guess or something old, tax exempt and slow..

Sounds like a cry for help reading that back - I have just got in from a drive out in it hence the post!

Time to get back to old MK2 GTIs and away from modern R stuff

I've just picked up a "new" petrol C Class Sports Coupé (the ugly one). It's 20 years old, slow, creaks a bit, but it's a simple and enjoyable driving experience... and I'm really enjoying driving it at sensible speeds down country roads. It also has a bit of a throaty exhaust as the exhaust system is old. Weirdly, I'm enjoying driving it more than the 911 Turbo. (That said, picked up the 911 after some suspension work yesterday having been bumming around in cold hatchback heaven for a few days and it feels like a real experience to drive, even at normal speeds.)

I've had similar thoughts, but I'm at a crossroads - although I'll not be getting rid of my M135i anytime soon as I love it, if I were to move it on it'd either be for an M2 Comp, or back into a 1.9 205 GTI.

The M2 is more track-friendly than the M135i (due to bottom end oiling issues) so that would open up trackdays without the fear of spinning shells, and the 205 (having had one before) is something I know inside out and would give me the "weekend tinkering" fun factor back.
