Aren't the Volvo auto boxes made of cheese? I have been looking at these recently but the Geartronic scares me! Also I would probably be looking at a car with approx 100k miles so not sure if any damage would already be done?

No they are not.

But. They are not 'sealed for life' like volvo says they are.
The earlier boxes are aisin units and like to kill themselves at 100k if they haven't had an oil change and they are too expensive to realistically repair.
Later boxes are much more tolerant but still like to gum up the solenoids and bang through gears or suffer gear flare if the oil isn't changed. Moderately simple and cheap to fix with a new solenoid pack.
But if it's had oil changes at 64k (same time as cambelt) and not been used to tow 2.4t all day without the optional gearbox cooler fitted, then it should be sorted.

It's a bit of an Internet 'thing', but mainly because they are usually so solid and regularly hit moon mileage and the box is the only thing to go wrong.... So it's becoming a bit folklore that 'they all go wrong'.

First and foremost, if scrump was genuinely upset by my post I unreservedly apologise. It was meant in the usual "tone of thread" as a bit of light hearted banter regarding the increased moderator activity within the thread. It was in no way meant as a personal attack on scrump nor any other moderator.

However. I still feel a little upset on how the aftermath was handled. I recieved an email telling me I was being suspended for spamming, trolling and abusive behaviour towards a moderator. I have never been an abusive person in my life. Not from behind a keyboard, nor in real life. And I take great offense at being described as such for such a light hearted use of the word grumpy.

Ben this is not a criticism of you or any of the PH moderation team, but it does feel to me like using a massive sledgehammer to crack a peanut.

Anyways I've said my bit ill go back to lurking smile

I'd want the top to go down for 15, but for someone who just wants to buy a really mint one that's been prepped by someone who knows what they're doing then I can definitely think of worse ways to spend that kind of money.
