Sell your car and buy a bicycle. Problem solved.

If only...

Rising fuel prices affects everyone. All the food you eat was supplied to the shops in diesel lorries. Brought to the depo's by Diesel trains and shipped over here using Diesel ships. Even the most hard core lycra clad cyclist who has never touched a car is going to be affected as the cost of almost literally everything will go up.
Yeah, unfortunately most of the supply chain is fuelled by diesel. I think the trick might be to be less reliant on diesel and reduce the links in the supply chain. And this can be achieved by.....

grand carts hauling freight and pulled along by enthusiastic cyclists yoked together and a return to cargo ships powered by wind and oar. And people simply buying less stuff.

I don't see any reduction in traffic on the roads, so maybe petrol and diesel are still too cheap?

When the increased energy bills start to take effect in April and October, things may change

It's nowhere near as bad here, but there is a bipartisan effort asking the government to temporarily stop the taxes on petrol.
Maybe you should get onto your local politicians to do the same.

I dont really care that much TBH

The family bus is a 3l diesel estate
On the motorway it easily delivers 50+ mpg

We did a 400 mile round trip to friends in London last weekend and even at todays spendy prices it moved 4 of us from door to door at hugely less cost than taking the train/tube/bus/uber and in less time

It isnt commuted or used around town, we either walk, cycle or take the bus

If long haul public transport cost the same as it did in other bits of Europe it would be binned off. However our train network is useless and expensive - and still using Covid as an excuse for cr4p timetables - so despite what fuel costs I'll still be driving.

COI have friends and family and business interests widely spread around the UK and have need to visit regularly. Annoyingly even me travelling solo to London is cheaper in the car than the train. Which is ridiculous

Its getting a bit silly. For the first time ever yesterday, i considered swapping my 330d for a 320d, because it cost me £80 to fill up which is getting silly now.

I hate 4cyl diesels with a passion but if fuel is £1.50 a litre and climbing, what can you do?
Buy a 6 cylinder petrol and actually enjoy driving!

Like my daily, but then I'm retired so do very limited mileage - although I did have a couple of 4cyl turbo-diesels in the early 2000s when I was doing business miles.

£2/ litre average price in a couple of months if this carries on.

Govt need to cut the tax to give the man in the street a chance. The price of everything is racing up. My wages are the highest they've ever been in my life at the moment but I feel my buying power goes down almost weekly!

I'd go back to an electric car but the way electric prices are climbing its hardly much of a saving over a frugal ICE car!
They're not going to cut the tax

That would not be encouraging the switch to EV

Soon, there will be a levy on Electricity by means of taxing EVs.

Fuel is a lot.
But most of us drive significantly less than we did 2 years ago.

With home working etc.

And progressing emissions and improving fuel efficiency means the TCO of petrol / diesel is probably not any different than it was 10 years ago.

It's probably a fair bit lower in real terms. In 2012 petrol was about £1.35 per litre, which would be about £1.75 in today's money. Plus as you say most of us are using less of it.

I have said it before, but I am amazed people haven't started to hoard cars such as the VW UP!, cars with £30 annual road tax and can do 60MPG.

Surely fuel is going to be in the £1.70 to £1.80 range in a couple of weeks?
My family diseasal Bussat is £30 road tax and does 60mpg, 68 mpg if I drive like a granny. Plus is has the added bonus of being a big comfortable large car and has a larger fuel tank for extended range.

Traffic does indeed seem . . . quite heavy currently. I drive into Nottingham a few days a week for work. Thankfully in the diesel. I've noticed that average speeds have dropped. People are accelerating a LOT slower away from lights etc. When im driving the diesel it's not an issue. It's actually quite calming to just pootle along behind slowly accelerating traffic, saving my own fuel.

Trouble is, when i take one of the silly cars for a drive I get frustrated by these slower driving techniques: I think i end up looking like Animal from The Muppets having a complete meltdown when driving the V8: apoplectic with rage at the slow chump infront of me (with no way to overtake due to traffic levels) smile

Just wondering if it's time to sell a 2.0T petrol!
I just bought a 90's 3.2l i6 for giggles. Other fun car is a 3.6l b6. The two 2.0l T i4 i have are the sensible dailies.
I did sell the 4.6 V8 tough, but not because of petrol prices wink

The clues in the model name.

The only way is Up.

Got to love these threads.

Used car residuals up by c50% and more but folks complain about a few pence on fuel prices. biglaugh

I suggested in an Email to my MP that they should have combined Quantitative Easing with a reduction in Fuel Duty a few years ago. It would have freed up more money in the pockets of those at the bottom rather than just pouring printed money into the top of the system. My MP agreed with my suggestion.

Paid £1.86 for Esso 97 premium just north of Glasgow. . £20 worth to keep me going. Later in the week filled up at Costco £1.49 for their 97 Premium. Getting on for 40p a litre difference within 5 miles of each other.

Along with other increasing costs prices are now high enough that when I was away for a camping trip last week near Oban I drove for max economy on the way up. Not atrue figure as it was by the car computer but was getting 61mpg from my 1.4Tsi Superb Estate. Cruising at 58-60mph max . Often slower due to bendy roads. I did hit 80 for one overtake but other than that old man driving.
