Fiat Coupe 2.0 20v Turbo | Spotted

Fiat's spritely four-seater still cuts a fine figure more than 25 years from launch

It's a Bangle, but not a BMW. Indeed, the Fiat Coupe was one of the last cars styled by Chris Bangle before his infamous move to BMW (I think the very last was the Alfa Romeo 145, but I could be wrong), where he oversaw some designs that, well, let's just say, have never been wholly accepted. Some have, mind, among which I'd include the E85 Z4 - because it's a cracking car to look at.

The Fiat Coupe is an odd one. It's so clearly a Bangle in that it's different and challenges convention. Does it work for you? Are you one of those people who consider it a modern classic? For me it's a car that I can love on a Monday and loathe on a Tuesday. And love again on a Wednesday because I'm loving this one today. Front-on still isn't my preferred viewing angle, but I'm enjoying the side profile - with those slash arches - and the rear three-quarters, with its stubby tail and four round, recessed lights. Very sweet. As is the detail element of the exposed, classic chromed filler cap.

Inside, it doesn't say Bangle but Pininfarina. And let's be honest, the latter adds cache where a Bangle doesn't - Susanna Hoffs aside. That's because, of course, the inside was the work of the legendary design studio, and while the materials might not be up to the standards of its high-end Ferraris, it manages to be more than the sum of its parts. Sticking in those body-coloured panels was a cost-effective solution, but one that definitely adds value.

Pininfarina competed to design the whole thing, as it happens. It was looking for something to fill the hole left after the demise of its General Motors tie-up to build the Cadillac Allante bodies. So it pitched the idea of a two-plus-two coupe to Fiat and submitted an exterior design proposal along with the interior. After the former was rejected it reputedly went on to become the Peugeot 406 Coupé - although it still manufactured the Fiat Coupe at its plant in Turin.

Famously, the underpinnings were the Type Two platform introduced with the Fiat Tipo in 1988. This also went on to be used for a number of Alfas, including the 145 as well as the GTV and Spider. It was a decent starting point, with MacPherson struts at the front and trailing arms at the rear mounted to a separate subframe. The engine options even started with the 2.0-litre 16-valve turbo from the Lancia Delta Integrale - but this one has the more desirable 2.0-litre 20-valve - a modular design that came as an inline four, or in this case, an inline five. With the addition of a turbocharger it delivered 220hp and 0-62mph in a swift 6.3 seconds, with a limited-slip diff to help regulate the 229lb ft of torque.

The Fiat Coupé went on sale in the UK in 1995 and enjoyed a good reception for its mix of style, power and agility. As time went on there were special editions and added bodywork that spoiled its design, but this car is nicely unsullied. It looks to be a very clean car, too. It's done nearly 100,000 miles but you wouldn't believe it scooting through the various pictures, which seem to demonstrate sound paintwork and an interior that's stood the test of time. Looking at the MOT history, it seems to have done the bulk of its work up to 2017, after which the fewer annual miles indicate it's been semi-retired. That may be why there were some brake issues, with an imbalance resulting in a failure in 2021. Clearly that's been rectified, because it got a ticket eventually, which is current until August this year. Summer fun for under £7k, then.

I wouldn’t buy one but I’m sure glad it exists.

25 years on, it’s not pretty but it’s definitely interesting…unlike most current cars.

I had one for 14 years, the longest I've owned any car, and still wish I'd found a lockup to keep it in rather than sell it.

Wonderful sense of occasion driving it, even adding petrol was more bearable with the polished alloy petrol cap and the whoosh it made when you opened it. Which at 28mpg was quite often...

I asked the buyer to hive me first refusal when he sold it (and meant it)!

One of the most likeable cars I've owned, so much so I bought it back three times, or twice can't remember. Brilliant fun, refined, practical, loved it

When my 1st got written off (not my fault!) I immediately bought another, sadly the replacement was a lemon & I lost about £2.5k in about 5mths when I got shot.

Still miss my 1st one which was very reliable, great cars, one of the only previously owned cars I miss.

In these crazy times £7k seems not too bad a price for that. It’s one of those cars that tempt me but I simply don’t know enough to be able to know if one is good or ropey, and I never get round to finding out more.

I recall when these were released and I thought they were fantastic looking cars, and actually I still do, the seats on this one look awful but i'm sure leather was an option on these, the material on these seats reminds me of seats in my first car which was a Fiat Seicento Sporting!

I'd probably buy one of these now as a weekend car if I had space.

Back in the day the 5 pot turbo was a decent option for a fast coupe. A mate of mine had one when I had an S14 200SX and another mate had a Corrado VR6.

It was a bit raggedy on the edge compared to my S14 but it was very quick and had a fabulous soundtrack.

Remember wanting one of these desperately in about 2005/6, test drove a 16v turbo and while it pulled well I really wanted the 5 cylinder. Couldn't find a good one.

Ended up getting a fiat stilo abarth. Idiot.

Not an idiot. Those things were good too. a colleague of mine still drones on about nearly buying one of these. Life is short, drive a fiat

I had one exactly like this - easy to find in a crowded car park!

Brilliantly fun car - I still remember the torque steer you'd get if you really went for it in first gear.

Bought one in lockdown last year and spent the summer using it. Really great cars and handled much better than expected. Definitely glad I ticked it off my must own list.
Rust is a major killer of these now - and it’s not obvious from the outside.

Always had a massive soft spot for these, these always remind me of when I was drooling over one at a car dealer when I was only about 15, and my dads mate came over and pointed out how much of a lemon it was and that all the panels had slightly mismatched shades of yellow and different levels of orange peel and none of the panel gaps were quite right, was my first lesson in paying attention to cars rather than just going all puppy eyed!

Back in 2000 I wanted one of these and went to sit in one at the local Fiat Dealer. Despite the dealership being empty and me making my "please come and talk to me, this is the easiest sale you will ever make" face, nobody came over so I left and ended up buying a brand new Subaru Impreza Turbo instead.

Probably a good thing in retrospect, but still like the look of these.

£7k. Yeah, I'd have a go at that. Looks good in yellow too. My old Evo 8 was in yellow, I lost it one day in a field of daffodils😁😁

I have always loved these and when looking for a hot hatch type car in the late 90's, one of these was on the list but sadly I never found one for sale so never drove one. They were quite rare back in the day, never mind now, I think the asking price is quite reasonable given the way things are today. Always loved the way the exterior colour came into the cabin, nice touch.

Stored well, cared for and driven as a weekend car only, this car won't lose any money I wouldn't have thought. Last of a generation of 90's sports cars, love it!

Is my memory failing me here, or did one of these not do really well at TOTB in the FWD category, back in the day?

You've got me thinking back now! I went to TOTB 2/3/4...years ago, and I reckon there was one of these there.

I'd always drove back from those events thinking how slow my car was after seeing all those really quick cars gunning it!

I've always admired the Fiat Coupe and I've always liked how different it looked.

If I remember correctly these are an engine out job to change the belt and coolant pump, so make sure that's been done
