My point was that the GR Yaris generated a lot of hype as a homologation / halo type model; The GR86 is just the GT86 replacement, and not a special GR-developed vehicle. This one may have had some Toyota development, but it isn't made by them.
I don't get the hype, but I'll freely admit it holds limited appeal to me.
next you'll be saying that the GR Hi lux is not special vehicle. Who do you think chose the location for the GR badge, motorsport engineers thats who, they found the optimum height for the logo not to affect handling and centre of gravity. Took 2 years of on track testing

I jest of course. But you have to admire the way the Japanese have tried to copy the German brands with having specialist divisions with a name. The Yaris GR was a proper skunkworks attempt but i agree the GT86 becoming the GR86 was more a naming technique than the same development of the Yaris which was from ground up. The same is so of the GR supra and yes the GR Hi lux. can't blame Toyota though although i do still miss the TRD. Hyundai have done the same with the N brand

The best affordable sports car but the rear seats are fecking useless if the same as the old one. Think my 911 is more practical in that regard.

Which puts it in a rather tricky position for me unfortunately.
I'm in the same situation - both children pretty tall and a dog - but my thinking is that there's very rarely more than two of us in the car and more often than not it's just me. Back seats for emergencies only and I can fold it flat for the dog if needed. What really surprised me was that my wife fell for it!
Good on you and I do think they will be a great car. With 2 small kids I can't use it as an occasional family car and it's not special enough to be a weekend blaster so it ends up a bit stuck for me and my needs.

If I were single and had space for only one do-it-all car, it would be nigh on unbeatable.

What makes a car an actual GR, rather than a GR in name only?

Given the brand has only been around a short time and there have only been three models so far (two 4WD hot hatches and a RWD sports car), it's not like the brand is particularly well defined.
They have also done a GR Sport variant of the new Landcruiser which has a more abrasive grille and more off road goodies fitted- 3 locking diffs etc.

I’m not really that excited about the GR86 but the GR Yaris is such a great car by the look and sound of it, really like the look of the Corolla too.

When you say the order went in at 10am yesterday did you do it yourself at home, and get a confirmation sent to your personal email?

Or did the dealer say he’d put the order in for you?

I really wanted one of these and have been waiting patiently.

Unfortunately didn’t get an order placed in time. It’s a pity as looks brilliant, quick enough and will be reliable.

I’ll probably test drive one a scalper has bought and if it was £2K more and is as good as people say will just have to accept it and pay. If not I don’t like it I haven’t lost out.

Congrats to all those who got one. My wife agreed to let me but I've missed the boat on this allocation. Ahh well.
You need permission off your wife to buy yourself a car? Unless she's buying it for you, I really don't see why anyone would need permission.
Because we have 3 children and are looking to move house sometime soon...strangely it's how we've done things together these past 17 years.

Yes this is a great car, but more really as a one car do it all for me also.

I have the same problem, as I run 2 or 3 cars for myself. It's not large or practical enough for the daily or fast/special enough for a weekend/track car.

I think the closest i have run to this was a PZ (Prodrive) RX8, about the same power and weight, RWD, LSD, superb handing, but those rear doors were ideal for access to child seats and you could also get two 6 footers in the rear easily. That car could do the nursey run and Nurburgring.

I don’t really get the underpowered and slow comments? My last car was an i30N and it felt pretty fast stock with a 0-62 of 6.1. Currently have a MK8 ST3 that again is great fun to drive and does 0-62 in 6.5.. the GR86 splits the difference at 6.3 seconds to 62 so it’s no slouch but it also has an amazing chassis, rwd, all the tech you could possibly need, looks good etc. US testers have timed the 0-60 times in the high 5’s which to me is perfect for a road car.

I ordered an electric blue manual and I’ve not been as excited for a car since I got my first! I don’t really race people anyway as I’m not a tit and I see speed cameras and camera vans on a daily basis so what’s the point. I’m buying this car for B road blasts and because other than the new CTR it was the only new car that appealed to me.

Toyota got something right going off the reviews from every other market where the car has already been launched and the fact it sold out as quick as it did.
Yes good point about testers finding the car is quicker than the makers state. This keeps happening. My Giulia Veloce was quicker than published. It may be to do with insurance or weight - there is a forum saying the GR86 is also 15lb/7kg lighter than published. So 0.5 per cent... Not nothing. The internet also tells me it's got the same power to weight, and 0-60, as the 1993 Porsche 968 Club Sport. Which will do me.

Yep it seems a great one car solution. Do the shop, park anywhere, track it, road trip it etc.

Probably a 7/10 across the board which is pretty good in this day and age.

They make a Cayman look very expensive. I think its impressive that they stick a ten year warranty on. My GT86 is as a 2014 car that I use as a third car for thrashing, its modified and tuned with 67,000 miles and nothing has gone wrong or required attention other than wear and tear items. The last service was the big one at 60,000 when they change the plugs etc and the Main Dealer only wanted £430 for the work which I thought was good

Very painless way to have a RWD sports car with a super low CofG that starts perfectly even when it been ignored for a month. Remapped and with a sports exhaust there's nothing to compete at this price point which is remarkable given its a purpose designed unique chassis and low volumes. I'd wonder if they even make a profit on them.

Until this car has 250 hp and 250 ft lb i dont see how exciting it can be, especially when you can pick up an mx5 for a lot less, it does look nice though.
Yawn!

The 1990s wants a word with you...they've a long list of +/- 1,200kg cars with sub-200bhp, even less torque, and more fun than most stuff on sale today...

This looks a little bargain of a car.
I just wish they could have made it look a little more special and I don't mean by sticking shiny bits on it.

Any pics of the new model then? Oh wait, that is the GR! I guess the GT has aged pretty well so no need to go OTT on it.

Only 124 bhp and huge amounts of fun on a damp, deserted, roundabout.

you can do that with any car....so i am missing your point ...?
Eh? Have you ever driven a car? That's the sort of comment I would expect from someone who doesn't drive much.
You might want to do a bit of reading up on the Twin-cam Corolla too.

I have one on order also. Really looking forward to it.

I am also a big BMW fan. I have owned most of the M cars. 1M coupe, M2 and older M3.
I still have my M2c but it is not as good as the 1m coupe. BMW M have become fat pigs! The M cars have grown to big and brings to much weight on the scales.

I now also own a Yaris GR all i can say that is a piece of art when driving that car. Toyota knows to keep the cars small and agile and low weight. The driving experience is so much better. I hardly use my M2c anymore. With the GR86 i might put the m2c on sale.

Low weight, 235hp and a small rwd car with LSD and 215/40/18 tires is about to hit the sweet spot for me! I don’t need 400 plus hp anymore. The fun is on backroads with nice corners. Small, Nimble and lightweight is key factor to have fun.

The reversed engineering of BMW M

Make cars bigger, heavier, more hp, wider wheels and tires, bigger heavier brakes is the wrong way around. After the 1m coupe it went completely wrong at BMW

There are always badge buyers for them these heavy cars are perfect. For the drivers who wants fun in corners there is Toyota GR. I am real happy they build cars like the yaris GR, GR86 and Corolla GR for us drivers!

I dithered till 10.30am and then paid up. Very glad I did. I bought the MX5 RF on spec in 2017 when it launched too and it was a very nice car for a couple of years but the early ones had a battery drain gremlin and weren't so fast, and it was a bit too small for me inside. The GR86 is exactly what I was after and might even be a forever car. If they start pricing per mile or petrol doubles in price I reckon it'll still put a smile on my face.
Funny the RF should get a mention here as this GR86 has got me looking at those again. For me my fun weekend car has to be a convertible, so the folding hardtop of the RF is perfect for the UK IMO. If the GR86 had been available as a “targa” looking folding hardtop like the RF, it would tick every box for me.

The RF just highlights the bargain the GR86 is. The RF with the 2.0 litre engine is £31300. A smaller and less powerful car without the back seats.
