I've seen this mentioned a lot lately. Not very Toyota like. What's the point of a car like this if giving it a caning results in this, especially with no warranty cover. Maybe they should have had Honda build the engine instead.

Maybe Toyota could have built the engine?

When the engine starts knocking its tits off - stop the car.

Or just carry on driving and hope it fixes itself?..

Interesting to know if this was a stock car; certainly sounds like some brake mods implemented.

Certainly on the mk1, wider rubber and significant brake upgrades , would probably significantly increase the risk of oil starvation on track.

Not sure on the latest model.

I walked right into that one laugh fair point... smile

Although I don't think the 1zz in my old MR2 was all that great either to be fair.

IIRC he did say he heard the noise but with his helmet on he thought is was a bit of loose plastic bodywork. TBH if it's knocking it's already too late.

I've seen this doing the rounds, it's be interesting to know if this car had any RTV sealant in the oil pickup. Seems that quite a few owners have had the issue but have fixed it before it ruined the car. Either way its not a great piece of marketing for Toyota.

It isn't but few people know the whole story. How was it driven for those 19k miles? Was it uprated in any way? Did sticky tyres cause oil surge?

Failures like this for road only use would be concerning but once you're tracking it you're on your own.

Wrong. (I work in the industry but not for Toyota).

The way the car is marketed, in the UK they wouldn't stand a chance of not honouring the warranty based on "track use". We obviously don't know the full story, and it may be that the car was modified, oil not filled correctly etc. etc. which is then a fair argument, but the "track use" get-out clause would not last a minute in court here.

Certainly not when you have a track mode with lap timers and have photos and videos of the car on a track on your website...

I saw a video on Youtube by Jimmy Oakes, where he took the sump of his brand new BRZ 2.4 to check the sealant.
There was a lot, but think the oil pick up was relatively clear.

This is just an inherent design flaw with a boxer engine. They have always had oil starvation issues compared to a conventional engine.

Yeah they've ruined the value of the ND MX5, when I ordered mine in July 2019 they offered me a poverty spec 1.5 in white for either £14k or £15k, new and unregistered. In the end I paid £23k for a top spec 2 litre and it's been great, but £35k? No.

Subaru in some places have this aid reputation but see they get a lot of grief in the US as not being that reliable.

That's obscene for a 1.5. The MX5s appeal was always the price. However when everyone else is profiteering they probably think they can get away with it. The prices of cars nowadays disgusts me.

Aye, I remember them being much cheaper than 35k. I imagine it's probably just for that "special edition" one, but still I can imagine you wouldn't get much change from 25-30k now for a brand new one.

Still we're living in a world of £50k civics...
