That's one car that I had made a comparison with too, along with things like the 968CS. I've ordered one and been playing around on zeperfs to see how it compares.

Can't wait.
It’s not exactly hard for old vs new. A fiesta ST is very comparable to an escort cosworth on paper.
Oh I get that. But what interests me more is that its very similar in weight and therefore power to weight. From memory and maybe from being a lot younger at the time, I had the most fun driving 80's and 90's cars 20-30 years ago and I think that the GR86 could be the closest car that you can buy new that gives a similar feel. It's certainly had some great YouTube reviews and apart from old stuff that is crazy money now, it's one of the few new cars that interests me and that I want to actually buy.

Yes, it will be interesting to see if the UK cars are anywhere near as fast as the US testers got - they often have rolling starts for the acceleration runs which gives great figures compared to European ones. Be great to see if it can outsprint the old Cosworths

Ah yes, I think one of the testers said something like 5.5 to 60 and I thought that this Can't be right. That would be the reason why then.

It should still get low 6's maybe even high 5's I reckon, depending on levels of mechanical sympathy.

Just for fun here’s the fiesta.

Yes, with a bit of luck Autocar will put it through the full road test rigmarole with proper weights and acceleration times etc

Though they seem to have focussed on EVs lately rather than figure stuff like the M240i Xdrive which they’ve had on the mag so may have to look to Sport Auto etc for a proper documented test

Phoned and they say Sept/early Oct at the latest for me. That suits as it's new plate and I have time to get stuff sorted and I'll be riding bike all Summer anyway. I'm just glad I've got a car coming

What time did you get an order confirmation? That’s about when I’d be wanting to get mine!

Well, I've just had an update email! And the Toyota site has a "processing order" item on it now. No delivery date but things are moving.

10:07am. I phoned them since I was convinced they'd forgotten me. Turns out I was within the next 15 to be phoned. It can't be first come first served, unless loads got in the week before when the link went up early by accident.

That's good to hear, not heard from them and was beginning to doubt!

I read an interesting comment on Trustpilot regarding the latest on-line launch of the new GR86 in the UK…

“ What Toyota UK have actually achieved with the latest GR86 UK launch is to pull an utterly cynical publicity stunt with complete disregard to the loyal customers who were expecting a conventional launch to see the car with the opportunity to test drive it before buying. Paying £30k+ for a car, with limited specs, that one has not seen is just damn stupid and desperate, unless buying the car for the purpose of selling it on after delivery for a substantial profit. And this I fear is what might have happened here. One Toyota franchise dealer I approached on the same day as the on-line GR86 “launch” actually referred to a couple of examples of the Yaris GR which were bought and sold on soon after delivery with a £4k+ profit each. Potentially, great opportunity for insider information manipulation. “When is gone, is gone” indeed Toyota, but what has gone in this instance is not just the over-hyped GR86 but LOYALTY and TRUST. I can assure you mine have gone for good! I am now looking to acquire an alternative car, a European one, of a much better specification.”

Have others had similar experiences?

This person is bitter because he/she wasn't prepared to buy before a test-drive. Which is silly because it was a £1000 refundable deposit.

Toyota gave the market a week heads-up that it would be online only. The website didn't crash, it went online when they said it would go online, it was first-come first-served. I don't see how they could have made it any fairer. For sure some will be flipped but there's over 170 confirmed order on the GRZoo forum which I'd imagine are all from enthusiasts.

Just reads like sour grapes.

They were trying to give consistent and fair access to relatively few uk vehicles and advised they'd do this online. The specs were well known and Toyota offer a deposit refund if you don't want the car when it arrives. I bought one, not as im stupid or desperate, but its had decent press reviews, the price was about 5k less than I'd expected, its only a 2 year production run and as are huge lead times on everything at the moment.

Mine arrives in 8 weeks... in build at present, can't wait.

Imagine the frenzy if Porsche decided to sell the GT products this way.

Prior notice, open to ANYONE, order online only from set start time, first come first served. Go!

Sounds better than, ‘sorry sir, you need to have bought 27 aygo’s , 12 corollas, 18 priuses , 7 landcruisers and also allow me to sleep with your wife first’ Porsche system.

Happy with the last bit, but no way I'm buying a Prius

That's great news for you, don't have a scooby when mine will arrive sometime in 2023 maybe?

Definitely sour grapes from this guy.

Only criticism of the online ordering is the GR86 wasn't on Toyota's website, I was emailing a link 10 minutes after ordering started so that delay has put me 6 months down the queue!

My biggest criticism of Toyota though is the communication since it's been appalling/non existent, it's plainly obvious they are totally unprepared for online ordering & don't have the staff or infrastructure to cope. I'm still waiting for the call & read on another forum one guy had the call today his order was 10.12 so nearly 3 weeks to contact 12 minutes of orders??
Mine was 10.28 so on that basis I'm weeks from a call, later
orders could be months away!
