How do you get on to the waiting list? I can’t see any options on the configurator

To be honest I don't think there's an option to still join the waiting list, there's a lot of who managed to get an order in that don't even know yet if we will actually get a car, Toyota only seem to have contacted the first 15 minutes of orders the rest of us are still waiting for the now mythical "call" to confirm if or when we will get a car.
I do suspect some people will get fed up with this pantomime & cancel which may free up some cars & maybe a few may drop out once they have driven a demo & perhaps find it's not for them.

There's a link at the bottom of the configurator page but it now redirects back to the build page so I guess the waiting list is full too.

I think the waiting list is off now

Done and dusted for the entire two year allocation so i read (from toyta themselves, they have sent an email confirming to those on the waiting list its all sold out, st out, no more left)

No one is sure if that's because they took well above the year 1 allocation in order numbers or what, some of us are concerned we wont see a car until 2023.

I read an interesting comment on Trustpilot regarding the latest on-line launch of the new GR86 in the UK…

“ What Toyota UK have actually achieved with the latest GR86 UK launch is to pull an utterly cynical publicity stunt with complete disregard to the loyal customers who were expecting a conventional launch to see the car with the opportunity to test drive it before buying. Paying £30k+ for a car, with limited specs, that one has not seen is just damn stupid and desperate, unless buying the car for the purpose of selling it on after delivery for a substantial profit. And this I fear is what might have happened here. One Toyota franchise dealer I approached on the same day as the on-line GR86 “launch” actually referred to a couple of examples of the Yaris GR which were bought and sold on soon after delivery with a £4k+ profit each. Potentially, great opportunity for insider information manipulation. “When is gone, is gone” indeed Toyota, but what has gone in this instance is not just the over-hyped GR86 but LOYALTY and TRUST. I can assure you mine have gone for good! I am now looking to acquire an alternative car, a European one, of a much better specification.”

Have others had similar experiences?
The car has already been delivered months ago in other regions, and there are loads of reviews online. So, I’m not sure what the problem is. Suggesting it’s desperate to buy a car on the back of those overwhelmingly positive reviews appears a little desperate on their part. And I’m not sure why it’s a cynical publicity stunt either? As others have said, sounds a lot like sour grapes.

I can't believe the ridiculous hype surrounding this car...?!

It's basically just a tweaked GT86 with an even more archaic engine.

It's posted elsewhere that Toyota have said today that the waiting list is closed, it has 1,000 people on it and there are only 400ish cars coming in the next two years.

If you have a hundred grand or so there are dozens of proper, clean sheet of paper sports (super) cars you could buy. On the other hand, for those who can't afford £47k for a Porsche, you're very limited in the new market - it's basically either a thoroughbred MX-5, or some derivative of a family hatch or saloon.

The GT86 thus doubled the number of affordable purpose-built sports cars on the market. Low C of G, decent balance, RWD, manual, not too heavy... pretty near perfect, apart from the slight minor issue of the accelerator appearing not to be connected to anything. Bit of an issue for a sports car.

The GR86 is a tweaked GT86, but it fixes the only problem, putting in 20% more capacity and thus torque for no extra weight - just enough to be fun on most roads.

If something is nearly perfect, and you fix the one problem with it, that's pretty big news. So yeah, people who like driving (as opposed to showing off the badge on their keyfob) are excited.

Because it's only going to be made for two years, and with the introduction of speed limiters for new model cars, it will be one of the last performance cars available in the UK, so it's value can only go up.

The problem with the Porsche is whilst the base price is attractive add on any basic features that anything else for £47k has and you’re soon looking at £55k+.

If it’s true about only 400 units too, it’ll not only be one of the last of its kind, it’ll also be one of the rarest.

I cannot believe their will only be 400 GR86’s when there must be about ~3000 GR Yaris sold in the UK. Demand is here in the UK.

It’s a shame if more 86’s are not made more like minded folk as what will sadly happen they will increase on the secondhand market and the “affordable” sports coupe title will be getting closer to an Alpine / Caymen prices.. £50k no thanks

So the 86 will be 7 x rarer than the limited edition Yaris.

Crackers.

It wasn’t exactly a big seller in the UK 5,000 sold in 9 years which is around 500 a year so with current restrictions in production probably why the UK has ended up with 400.

Seriously - the situation with the Yaris is different. The GR86 is a known quantity, if your only significant issue with the old one was the engine, then surely you will be happy with the new one. You don't really need a test drive. The Yaris was a different kettle of fish and unless you knew the yardsticks against which it was judged by the press then buying blind was not imo a good idea (except as a flipper). I drove one and it didn't suit (good car that it undoubtedly is). A friend bought one blind and subsequently found it didn't suit him either - and he quickly sold it.

If there's only going to be 400 then anyone who has one has bagged themselves a great car that's unlikely to do any serious depreciation in my view.

It’s a bit more than that, howmanyleft lists around 6800 and looks like it was sold from 2012 Q2 to 2020 Q2 (circa 850 a year).

Obviously most GT86 were sold early on in it’s lifecycle so you’d have thought they could have flogged a couple of thousand in the U.K. from 2022 Q2 to 2024 Q2 (Yaris GR is up to about 3000 since 2020 Q4)
