Once the Clutch Delay valve is taken away I find the 5 speed Getrag shift in my Z3M Coupe to be a delight, I’m a bit surprised how good it is actually. I think the 6 Speed ZF of the M3 and Z4M are quite a bit worse unless fitted with a short shift kit or modified.

For you maybe!

I haven't driven one either but don't want to - I'd prefer a manual CS or a CSL with a manual conversion as as some CSL owners have done.

But my Z4M with a manual ZF gearbox is so much better than my 7 previous BMWs with Getrag boxes, and they seem to be cheaper than E46 M3s.
Shame the Z4M wasn’t even nominated by the piston head readers to be included on the list.

Seems to be a bit of a marmite car.

The Manual CS is 5% better than the standard M3 with the same clunky gearbox.

The CSL steering rack is the only difference you feel as a driver.

decent list and a worthy and not unexpected winner.
Now BMW tend to slap M on plenty of mediocre cars.
Totally agree with this.

No point in bickering about preferred gearboxes and why other M cars were not on the list, I think we can all agree that the cars from that old era are much more enjoyable than the stuff coming out of Munich now!

If I put my Grandad hat on I can certainly appreciate the highs of the E39 M5 and the E46 M3 etc for sure, however BMW still make good M cars now for me, and you only have to look at the current M5 CS to see that I think.

The only bit I find confusing in this list is putting the regular e46 M3 above the e9x M3. In saying that, I don’t know if the e9x should slot in quite so high - perhaps rather that the e46 shouldn’t be quite where it is.

Went from an e46 (CS) to an E90 (standard), and I can’t think of anything the e46 did, that the e90 doesn’t do better?

Better front end, more pliant chassis, better gearbox, epic engine. Daily livability is of course much better too, but even taking that out of the equation the e9x is to my mind the better and more exciting car overall.

I could say the I6 sounds more ‘Motorsport’ than the v8, but you forget all about it when you hear the induction wail beyond 5k rpm.

The mpg and the lack of range used to frustrate me with my E92 M3 as a daily. Whereas I'd imagine that the E46 M3 is a bit better in that regard.

I used to get 23mpg out of the Z4M I had, whereas I only got 17mpg out of the E92 M3. Not a lot of difference granted, but you do notice it I think.

It's difficult to resist responding when you get gems like this though biggrin :

Suggest you have a look back at the various PH articles on the CSL over the past 10 years, along with the resultant threads that accompany them, as a large proportion of those who’ve actually owned one, consider the SMG ‘box an intrinsic part of the CSL’s DNA.

As I’ve said previously, if the E46 M3’s manual ‘box had a shift that was MX5 or Ford 2000E like in feel and directness, you comments may have some validity. But as it’s more akin to stirring a bowl of cold porridge, it makes you look like nothing more than a bitter Luddite who thinks a return to drum brakes and manual chokes and crossplies would be beneficial for “real” drivers.

Because PH is the end all be all. laugh
Yep, because there are no previous or current E46 M3/CSL owners on PH are there ? ... laugh

Read all your replies throughout this thread and your fancy wording to back up your deluded view on how a 20yr old manual gearbox is worse than a 20yr old half arsed attempt at a flappy paddle gearbox. Just as a CSL gearbox flash enhances the crap gearbox that it is, an e60 545i or e46 330d manual shifter kit, transforms the way a manual e46 m3 will shift too.
Many thanks for the unbiased perspective of a manual E46 M3 owner on the SMG transmission ... hehe
A manual E46 330D ? Wow, why on earth would would you ? They're far better with a slushbox, I covered close on 150K miles in mine. It was a wonderful car.

And a manual 'box in an E60 545i ? Seriously ? Did someone tick the wrong box on the options list ? nutssilly

But sure continue on with your uppity attitude. Need a laugh after all
Rest assured I will, and I'm glad it's proven such a source of amusement for you.

As we're doing the gratitude thing, many thanks for your polite and insightful contribution too, it was a gamechanger as PH posts go.

I'm heartened to know you enjoyed my "fancy wording", it does make the effort of posting on here all the more worthwhile.

And as for my "uppity" attitude, pot, kettle, black springs to mind Mr furious ...
