Lovely car, lovely engine. I have a ML55 and have owned it for 7 years servicing it myself.

When I first look at ML55s the internet was awash with negative comments and how people should keep away. However you only turn to the internet to complain so thats 90% of the comments. When I looked for advice on Ml55s nearly all of the advice to stay away were from people that had never owned a Ml55 !!!

The M113 engine and associated gearbox is brillant. Like others mentioned its bullet proof and any common issues are so well documented on the net / youtube that nearly all issues can be resolved easily. As long as it's been serviced well, i.e. 2x plugs per cylinder, crank sensors, coil packs, thermostat / sensor / water pump are replaced then it will be fine. Gearbox usually needs new filter, conductor plate and wire connector housing. Wiring on a 20+ year old car will always play up / go brittle mine did as its a hot engine bay but nothing difficult to replace / rewire / cover.

The main issue about this car will be the ABC pump but again study the numerous youtube videos and you will soon learn / understand how these work and how to fix them. You cant easily swap out the shocks for shocks / springs as the ABS runs the power steering too. Find yourself a good indy and you will be ok.

These cars have been floating around the £5K price now for a few years meaning that you aint going to loose much cash. That's a lot of car / bang for your bucks.

Is cheap but not throw it away cheap so has all the hallmarks of a money pit. Its old bt not classic.
You can pretty much say that about every grand coupe ever made. BMW 635csi? BMW 850i, Jaguar XJS, 560SEC? All expensive to maintain and all could be bought for $3000-5000 a decade ago and be driven away.

It's the way depreciation works. Most cars luxury cars will be worthless by the time they're 15-20 years old because they cost more to maintain than their resale value justifies. The bad ones or the ones with bad owners will eventually be scrapped and the good ones will see their values appreciate. I always tell people that they need to remember that if they buy a 15 year old Mercedes for $5000 that cost $120,000 when new, they're going to have to deal with maintaining a $120,000 car and not a $5,000 car.
