t's kinda already happened:-

4.1 tonnes (the battery pack alone is 1325 kgs). 1000bhp. 20" wheels. 35" tyres.

0-60mph in 3 seconds, pulling around 0.74g in the process. Range is about 325 miles, charging is up to 350kw depending on model and it adds around 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.
Seen that before and I'm sure nobody in the history of mankind has said this about a Hummer but that looks nicer than whats vaguely hidden under the XM camo.

But is this what cars are becoming? 4 tonne bricks with 1.5 tonnes of batteries needed to push them along?
No, it's what one car has become. Not 'cars'. And Hummers of old were already big heavy beasts. The HEV is, by far, the largest and heaviest passenger car made by GM available for the public to buy.

Perhaps a Euro-China political or economic 'disturbance' that causes BMW to pull out of the Chinese market will save us from this design language? It's the only way and with 840K sales in China in 2021...that market is clearly dictating the way these things look. Shift the HQ and production to China and Bayerische Motoren Werke becomes Beijing Motoren Werke.

It seems no one at BMW asked the obvious question: "What does M stand for again?"
I bet they did ask.

And the answer that came back across the board room table was "money".

There must be some BMW salespeople on this forum. Honestly, what do you think of the prospect of getting one of these in your showroom (if it'll fit of course)?
They'll be thrilled because, for some utterly inexplicable reason, st like this is extremely popular. This will likely sell very well. Perhaps not so much in this country or mainland Europe, but certainly in the USA and wealthier parts of the Middle East.
And no BMW salesperson I have ever met could give a monkeys about what they were selling.
Exactly. Whilst people keep buying these things and they’re earning commission I doubt they give two sts what they’re selling.

Yup. Many people on here have this romantic notion of BMW being this great motorsport brand and their M car is some kind of racing car for the road. bks.

All BMW care about is money. Money and money. They don't care where it comes from and they don't care about the past.

Just bring in more cash and it's all OK.

Racing, motorsport etc is all secondary at best.

+1

I remember an article by David Mitchell that shifted my expectations here. There is a temptation to attribute human desires, morals or ambitions onto companies, but that's totally wrong. A publicly traded company is a thing designed to do a job. Just like a toaster is there to make toast or a washing machine is there to clean clothes, a public company exists to make money for shareholders. We, the consumer, should expect exactly no more or less of it than that.

Sure they might talk about mission statements, heritage and vision, but that's all just public relations. They'll lean into those things only because it improves their bottom line. A company doesn't have a feel for its heritage any more than my fridge does. If BMW can make more money building SUVs than great drivers cars then we should fully expect them to do so. If they can make more money building tractors then we should expect them to do that too.

Because BMW, like any other business, exists to make money as its primary function.

Why people find this so hard to understand beats me.

Yes, they made money selling attractive cars. But it appears they can make even more money selling ugly ones.

20 years ago BMW weren't as big/successful as they are now - they did not sell in the numbers they do now nor did not make the level of profit they do now. The X5, the car that started this trend, was literally 2 years old.

Also, their cars were attractive to you then, but that isn't what the main market BMW sells to wants today as they want large SUVs with all the latest tech and comforts, not small, light sedans with manual gearboxes and wind-up windows - you do realise that you're no longer the priority, right???

[quote=flukey5]In a world where we're becoming increasingly conscious of over-use and waste, cars like this feel even more excessive and crass than they otherwise would. Being a hybrid doesn't change the fact it's probably close to a 3 tonne glut of excess, with a coefficient of drag comparable to a bulldozer.

This. I've said in other posts modern 'cars' are so unnecessarily heavy. There is no real need for vehicles like this, except to flaunt wealth.

That's all well and good for the wealthy, but there should be even more taxation on vehicles like this. Large, heavy, working vehicles I can cope with.

This will never see anything other than the school run. Sickening really.

A good few years ago BMW said that to stay independent they needed to grow the size of the company and not become a subsidiary of VW, GM or Ford. That’s basically what they’ve done. I do think it’s a shame that where Mercedes have let AMG of the leash and Audi produced the R8, BMW have been far more conservative in not allowing M to build a full blow sports car and more focused cars.

I won't be swapping my M5 for this anytime soon. Much like most SUVs it's hideous.
It may have a mountain of power, but it's certainly no M car.
