I have just as much fun in my iQ as I do the E60 M5 for 80% of the time.

In the iQ I can just get in it and drive like it how I like it.

The M5 with its highly-strung V10 requires warming up, checking the oil level, engine temperature and ensuring it's in P500 mode before driving it properly. Then you have the relentless thirst for VPower, all of which adds to anxiety levels.

The iQ is relaxing, handles great and is kind to my wallet, whereas the M5 is more stress-inducing in terms of the need for mechanical sympathy and financially.

Of course for the brief moment I let the M5 rip through the gears it's amazing, but I don't get to experience that as often.

A good compromise is my previous car, a mapped 535d but for now I'm enjoying the 2 extremes..

Was always interested in cars and have no judgement on the choices of others. I like to read about the owner experience of different cars.

I would not be without an SUV as part of the garage- they are great for towing, Great Dane transport ,bad winters and off-roading and a well-designed comfortable SUV is a pleasure. I put big mileages on mine. No idea why this seems to irk people but that’s life.

Went through decades of BMW M car ownership and stopped after the E63 M6, a car that was sub-optimized by its transmission. I saw one yesterday that looked identical to my old car and chatted with the owner.

It was an OEM 6-speed. I had no idea that they had produced a small run of manual cars in 2008 -thought only the M5 had this option. There is always something new to learn.

I went to Porsches after getting some passenger laps on the Nürburgring and was impressed by the handling , but am well aware that lots of them are never tracked. If people want to buy a car for status , owning something better than the neighbours then good luck to them. Would not bother me one bit to have the worst car on the street if I could not afford better.

So,not bored, keep an older manual 911 because it’s so involving ,have tried most of the better EVs and am too much in love with the sound of a well tuned engine to make the emotional connection with an EV. Maybe if I were a teenager it would be different.

I buy cars to use them, not look at them but motivations vary and I don’t care about not judge those who have different reasons.

To someone else, who cares less about the running costs, the M5 will be the perfect car for them.

That's not a poke at you. I'm just pointing out that the experience of ownership of cars is significantly infuenced by the running costs, and the ability to ignore them.

(my next door neighbour has the V8 M5 and he warms that bugger up every morning for 10 mins, at exactly 8.05am :-) - without fail :-) )

People get joy out of cars in different ways. Some want luxury and space and mod tech, others want raw pace and noise while others get the joy on that b road of linking up corners.

With costs of cars, maintenance and fuel increasing and road surfaces, speed cameras and poor driving standards decreasing the opportunity to have fun most cars are becoming the heavy luxury cruiser and that's the market direction now.

I accept we all pine for a previous generations and yesteryear when things were cheap and fun and etc etc... However I do feel we are seeing for many the death of fun driving.

Great for those who can afford weekend cars and big garages but fun for most has gone. When I was younger most wanted a golf GTi. Could get people in it, but it was also a fun car. The latest one is massive and heavy and the fun isn't the same.

Factor in the current limbo between ice and EV as we move to the latter, it's not a great time for a car enthusiast who is working to a budget.

I take it his place of work is 5 minutes' walk away?
