Probably
Regulation on pedestrian safety
Improving drag Coefficient
Standing out:being different.

They are emission free no pollution out the exhaust. No cancers in the lungs.

How is ICE a fking clown world?

it goes faster yes, but it aini't going to be any quicker in the real world for most people who don't actually drive above 100 mph very often because it's rather frowned upon and frankly, there's mostly too many cars in the way these days. A golf Gti these days is not at all entertaining to drive, sorry, it's an inert fun sponge ime.....
I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Golfs but I'd still wager that most keen drivers would prefer a current Golf GTI to any of the ID clones.

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not!

Regulation on pedestrian safety? Improving drag coefficient?

Because it’s electric and on the way to net zero.
VW are not going down the route of hydrogen so it’s EV only.

The good times of driving are over and these with black boxes blocking any speeding I’d the future. Get used to it. And if you think you can carry on using ICE think super ULEZ no parking for ICE duty rises in fuel and petrol going up and up and up making the reality that you will be priced off the road.
I think you're probably right sadly. It's going to take some time of course, but I do think the idea that petrolheads are going to be allowed to enjoy their ICE cars forever is rather fanciful. If we are allowed to drive them, they will be so expensive to run that most won't be able to afford it.

er, folks this is really just a Golf Gti replacement / competitor

So it's perfectly fast enough, handles perfectly well enough and just works as a car really.

it's not a Ferrari or a Lotus and i wouldn't take it for a sunday drive just for fun anymore than i would take a Golf Gti for a sunday drive just for fun.

the difference is in the real world this EV will be faster and easier to drive, quieter, smoother and consume between 3 and 4 times less energy and emit something like 5 times less carbon for every mile it is driven, and on short, slow trips, which are very typical in the uk driving during rush hour etc, it'll probably double those reductions
I know lots of people that would drive a Golf GTI just for fun.

Are you? Do you not think EVs are attempted to be designed for maximum possible slipperiness.

Pedestrian safety has changed car design and continues to do so

Seldom in the history of GTI vs. Cupra has the latter felt so much like the default recommendation.
I can see where you're coming from, Matt, but this doesn't seem to be that comparison. Until VW sees fit to release an ID3 GTi, you're metaphorically comparing the Leon Cupra with a Golf SE.

Given that the Born is a bit of a disappointment and the details are lacking, this seems in keeping with VW "holding back" on Seat/Skoda branded products in order to protect the GTi badge. (Knowing the ID3 GTi won't happen, are they holding back for the next generation?)

The problem is that they're holding back on product lines which are already compromised. It is hard to shake the impression that the ID3 and all its stablemates have been built partly on the cheap after VW needed to pay massive fines for its Dieselgate fracas. The infuriating multimedia system which dominates the current Golf/Leon/Octavia- so bad in the Leon I had as a hire car that it'd put me off buying any of that generation of ICE car- is likely to have been another casualty of that affair. The necessity of making the BEV powertrain work has meant skimping on "details"... but those details are the things which surprise and delight people.

I suspect that this and other BEV products will help the VW Group recover but I imagine that the enthusiast set on a BEV hot hatch will either need to wait for another ten years for VW to release a worthy electric hot hatch.

In the meantime, I suspect the nearest things to a hot hatch which one can actually buy are a Mini Electric or a low-mileage BMW i3S. Whether they ring an enthusiast's bell is up to them and both are flawed, of course... but neither of those is a tarted-up version of a more pedestrian product.

TL; DR: I suspect anyone thinking about this for some electric fun will be happier in a low mileage i3S instead.

What is with the privacy glass?

With normal glass, the design would flow so much better. Recently, I saw it on a 911 and could not help thinking that it would be unlikely that a head of state would be in the back

I think the car is a very presentable hatchback, but tarnished a little bit by the privacy glass

Other EV offerings in this group will be coming very soon, on that we can be certain
So with you on the privacy glass. Can you even buy a car without it these days? Mine is so old it wasn’t invented and is the better for it. Never looks good and makes it gloomy in the back. Apart from that I like the electrocupra even though it’s too slow.

No thanks, I'd rather be dead than drive one of these scam unethical vehicles. Electric vehicles are the answer to the question nobody really wanted to ask the question to.

Follow the money people, you are being scammed and nudged by the government and the media in to excepting the lie of man made climate change.
Couldn't agree more...what does it tell you when many of the keynote speakers at COP26 were bankers, for example: Larry Fink CEO of Blackrock - they are all invested in the climate change scam. All the predictions for well over fifty years haven't come true. Has there ever been a more impotant time to do your own research?
Follow the money,

Those promoting the fear, are the same ones selling the solution.

They can't push people into EV's if the price of Petrol is cheap !

One complaint I have about the Born (might be the same for all EVs?) is when I was checking out the boot I discovered the hidden storage but it has the charging cable in it. However if your boots full of grocery luggage stuff it’s then difficult to get the cable out /a faff or you dump the cable on top of all your things. Not great/annoying I’d say.

The other thing is the sheer size of the wheels so so tall/big looked fine but wow I can imagine those tyres will be pricy.
I guess if you were that conscious of the cost of tyres you'd buy the base version with 18" wheels.

I do think it's an oversight that they weren't able to incorporate a frunk into the ID3/Born, purely to store cables. I find the one on my Polestar super useful.

Are you always this cheerful?
Nah. The coming of economic Armageddon will derail all this green nonsense, it's already happening in some places. The future looks a lot like the past: ultra modern cars will expire naturally and old ones that can be fixed will become increasingly expensive. The anti-green movement will be the next Brexit and pressure will be put on legislators to revoke low emission zones and so on.

Battery operated cars were nothing more than a flash in the pan when they were first tried; they will be again.

Don't normally comment on these ones as its usually pretty toxic however we have just bought a V3 77kwh 230hp version in Aurora Blue with the blue interior.

A couple of comments:
- It's a replacement for another electric car and for our needs it suits us perfectly.
- It's in no way a "warm/hot-hatch" and comparing to those ICE cars that are in that category means that you miss out on what does make this car worth a look.
- Outside of Tesla's which I wouldn't touch with a bargepole, its a great choice in the small hatch EV class and importantly its a car you can buy now.
- For those that are talking I3s v this - please go and drive them both. I have and its not even close. The I3 unfortunately feels last EV gen, and we currently own two BMW's and would have an electric BMW in a heartbeat if there was one that suited our needs. There isn't.
- Lastly a word on availability. Its very difficult to get hold of any EV car at the moment. Also a lot of the alternatives that might be interesting are in reality at least a year away. We pulled the trigger on this one as a replacement for this very reason. In three years time there will be a lot of very interesting alternatives to the Born and I'll be delighted to be able to pick from them when that time comes.

I presume people are buying/leasing these things for tax breaks and “cheap” motoring ??

Is anyone genuinely buying them for any other reason?
