familiarity breeds acceptance..
Personally I still hate the grille, the profile proportions and the fake rear diffuser.
Don't care how common they get, poor design is always poor design imo.
I've got a theory about the current BMW design direction. It's deliberately bad and controversial - deliberately lowering the aesthetic bar. BMW have calculated that whilst their cars are popular and brand loyalty high, they can go through an 'ugly' design phase without sales impact, thereby giving them a clear run to create better-looking cars in the next generation. If they didn't do this 'ugly reset', they'd end up with every generation looking barely different from the last, and customers losing interest, and loyalty in the long term. Personally I still hate the grille, the profile proportions and the fake rear diffuser.

Hobbling their own products for the benefit of domestic rivals! Behave! Besides… BMW are making more money than ever.
Mercedes had an agreement with VW not to encroach on each others patches until the launched the A Class into the Golf segment. Ferdinand Piech was incensed… BMW were already there with the 1 Series.

back in the day (2008) I had an Imola red e86 z4Mcoupe point being as I recall lots people were saying bloody hell there/its gopping but as I understand it they are now regarded as desirable , maybe the design just needs a bit of time , that being said im not overly struck
Well maybe it's just as well we all like different things! I loved the looks of the E86 ever since I first saw one, but I didn't have one until 2014. I'm on my third now and the latest is an MC, albeit in Silver Grey because when you are buying a used car you don't get much choice if less than 600 were sold in the UK.
I'd have loved an Imola Red one with Light Sepang or Champagne leather but beggars can't be choosers!
I'm not a fan of the looks of the M4, but am a sucker for Imola Red.
Still horrid. It was never just the grill..The fact they couldn't be arsed to resolve the UK plate placement leaving it looking like after thought is weak. Add to that the slab sidedness/weight around the rear 3/4 is just a poor effort. Dull, heavy and ugly....China will love it.🙄

This ^ Does nobody else see this? It makes the M4 look like the GL spec with too-small wheels and under-inflated arches. The grille is just as hideous as always, simply less obvious when the whole pig is painted red.
I don't like the grill much either, but I think the problems are much worse elsewhere. The rear quarter on the 4-Series makes it looks really tall and ungainly, and it even effects the 3-Series to a degree. The M3 is the better looking of the two, but even that has some really clumsy details. The grill could (and undoubtedly will) be fixed by an aftermarket bumper, but some of the other stuff is baked in to the car, and is far less easy on the eye.

I'm still not warming to these current designs.
In my day, BMW made cars you actually lusted after because they looked great and you didn't have to make excuses for the challenging aesthetics. All the cries of 'It's grown on me, 'familiarity breeds acceptance', 'at least it's different etc.' 'actually I kind of like it'... is all such bks. You're spending £70/80/90k on a car FFS. You've got to really WANT it and not feel a bit sick looking at it.

They would be the people who have actually bought it… we all have our reasons for buying the cars we do. If I could only have one car as a daily and it was a choice between a C63, RS4 and the M4… personally I’d take the BMW. No car as ever made me feel sick looking at it… some people are so fragile.

What if you like the way it looks?I am pretty sure that design is subjective. A little like colours, some prefer black, other prefer blue, others red.
Beauty is the eye of the beholder.

With regards to the looks, it's simple really.
When you park it up, will you look back at it as you walk away?
Yes = You like the look of it.
No = ...

Obviously it is great if you can get both though, and the F82 M4 hits the spot for me because I love the way it looks and the way it drives too.
