Chopped Down Trees - Clean Air Zone
Discussion

Context is everything… those trees could have been suffering from disease which required their felling before they came down on the road… could be part of a larger highway improvement scheme which would seem compensatory planting elsewhere etc.
Yeah but that's not emotive though is it. If it's not pushing buttons for those who are happy to read a headline and reinforce an opinion they already hold what's the point of reporting it?1) They don't look like mature trees. It looks like scrub, rather than significant woodland or any kind
2) i suspect the sign is to show motorists there is a roundabout ahead. The fact there is a clean air zone on the sign isn't really relevant
3) What matters in terms of tree's and clean air is the inclusion of LARGE areas of forestry, not a 100 yard square section of scrub by a road. Yes, all greenery is good, but far better is proper managed woodland.
4) Pushing private motor vehicles and eventually most of our road vehicles including busses and truck to BEV architecture is going to provide a enormous reduction in local pollution

It’s the only reason for the post The huge outcry and resistance to GMC’s proposed “clean air zone”
Perfectly good Signs right across Greater Manchester have been replaced at massive cost with ones bearing the CAZ logo
The outrage over the plans has led to the CAZ being shelved ( for now )

Woodland management, by cutting down old trees, and planting new ones is best. Younger trees take up CO2 faster.
Younger yes. But not if they're much smaller. Pica-Pica said:
They do grow, you know. Older trees have to be cut down at some stage before they become a hazard
Thanks. I know that though. What you say means it could be a net negative affect for maybe 2-3 decades. Seems worth hanging onto mature trees where possible. I also appreciate that sometimes it isn't possible.bad company said:

What a tragic thread. Fact is the OP would be first in the outrage line spitting his dentures out over his morning Daily Mail if any form of chargeable zone signage was obscured calling it a scam etc etc.
You’ve made several ridiculous assumptions there.Mabbs9 said:

As I understand it new trees produce CO2 for their 1st 20 to 30 years whilst mature trees remove CO2.....as a generalisationPica-Pica said:

Yes but it only works if the cut down trees do not return their carbon back to the atmosphere by burning them but instead left to rot down.Wonder what happened to the cut down trees?
