Other car is concept car which is not coming to consumer markets. Mirai is already in production and you can actually buy it.
except nobody has because it's a terrible, expensive and impractical car.........I was interested a couple of years ago but they never contacted me - despite filling in details twice!
How long does that car take to charge? 20 years ago Clarkson did London to Edinburgh and back again on one tank in an A8. I imagine the refuel was also cheap and quick.

Averaging 50 mph from Stuttgart to Northamptonshire is actually a pretty firm pace considering it includes the M25 and the limited section of the M20. I regularly do Germany - Gloucestershire and a 50mph average is about my lot when driving more or less at the limit. They weren’t hanging about tailgating lorries for the sake of range.

I'd be curious to see the logged data from the run.
Time of day, route, actual speeds driven at. 56mph average is pretty high. Would suggest driven at night with no traffic.
They started at 7 am in Germany and arrived 12 hours later on the French Riviera, so not overnight. It was a regular journey, in regular traffic, slow at first but they were able to up the average speed in the middle and later sections. Here is the Merc press release with lots of details, apologies to the conspiracy theorists that think they somehow cheated their way to this achievement. The press release puts any notion of that to bed. There is a video tab in the press release webpage that links to footage from the actual journey.

Why oh why can't we have decent looking EVs? I know it's subjective but that thing is hideous, particularly the rear end. There is at least one good thing about getting old, I should see out my driving days with the ICE and if not, I'd be too old to care! Would manufacturers please stop trying to make the cars look overly futuristic just because they're electric
Do you think there might be reason why all ultra-low drag cars look very similar, particularly at the back?braddo said:

It’s a general observation and opinion. Some EVs are boxy, not all “ultra low drag cars”. The comment was around EVs in general.
The boxy ones that you would complain have a poor range? I like the design. There is something pleasing about a functional design and it is of course unlike anything else.
I'm sure part of why Mercedes is going for efficiency and low drag as that it will help them create EVs for higher speed driving with a realistic range. I would be more curious about that than the outcome from sitting in traffic jams in England. Eg steady 90mph, how far does it get? Or 120mph let's say.

Seriously impressive near enough 750miles on a single charge and air conditioning on for than half of the journey last Mercedes I had with air conditioning guzzled fuel like Oliver Read & Alex Higgins out on an all dayer, but anyway it's impressive figures and once I got to love the rear I would quite happily live with 1 of these but won't ever be able to afford 1 .
The looks might not appeal to everyone that can afford them but for the ones that do they will be receiving a quality Ev without range anxiety.

Tesla - where are you???
Charging. The value of a good, reliable charging network cannot be understated.
IMO, There will be a sweet spot for range for everyday use which I think will be around 500 miles quoted, 400-420 miles real life. What is that in real life terms, london to Edinburgh with a single charge when you get there to get back? If manufacturers offer this and keeping innovating to reduce the costs in achieving this, coupled with a good charging network, this is going to work for most people. If people need single tank diesel equalling range then they can pay the premium for the long range version.
OK, I’m not an EV fan... but this is impressive.
It looks really nice to, touches of Porsche / XJ220 about it & for £110K in 2023.
Have to take this with a pinch of salt though.
Is this a case of x2 lightweight drivers & their toothbrushes.
Throw in x2 average people with luggage over a dark wet winter weekend...the results might be a bit different.

Pointless.
Chargers everywhere and increasing by the day, EV's that will already do 300 miles on a charge (or 5 hours+ of driving) and can recharge in < 30 minutes.
Who is this for? How many people need a car that can drive for 10+ hours without stopping for a break?
The battery tech is impressive but should be used to make EV's lighter with smaller batteries and better energy density, not give them ridiculous range that 1 in a million people might need. Give this a 50kW battery and it would weigh < 1500KG and still cover 400 miles.
Range anxiety is a term thrown around by people who've never owned an EV and is something you get past very quickly when you have.

Why would the current EQS with 400+ miles of range leave you will range anxiety?Range anxiety is a term thrown around by people who've never owned an EV and is something you get past very quickly when you have.

Well yes it would because most of those quoted EV ranges are barely believable horse st.SWoll said:

Rubbishing range anxiety as a concern is the mission of the determined EVangelist. Quite frankly it is far more than a valid concern, ranges deteriorate over time and are utter bks to begin with. The charging network is also very far away from every being fit for purpose and EVs are totally unsuitable for anyone without home charging. This range story just means in extreme cases perhaps an EV can match a similar range to a cheap second hand diesel. Great.Cue the usual EVangelist nut-jobs arriving in 5...4..3...
